Tiktok is copying the Collaboration feature of Instagram

Instagram and YouTube copied the popular short video content format from Tiktok and launched as Reels and Shorts. Tiktok might be also copying the whole image sharing concept of Instagram and turn it into a separate app called Tiktok Photos which I have reported first a few weeks ago. The trend of copying features is continuing. </p><p>The latest news is that - Tiktok is working on bringing the "Collaboration" feature which will allow creators to invite upto 5 other creators to make a collaboration post. We already know that Tiktok have "Duets" but this is only limited to 2 people only. This collaboration feature was made available in Instagram previous year. According to Instagram - <i>You can use Instagram Collabs to co-author posts with other accounts. The creator of the original post can invite another account as a collaborator. If the account accepts the invite, their username will be added to the post and the post will be shared with their followers</i>.</p><div>I did an APK teardown of the latest version <b><i>34.1.15</i></b> and it reveales some information about the upcoming feature in Tiktok. Here are some strings -<br></div><blockquote>• You’re invited to collaborate<br>• You’ll be listed as a collaborator on this post. It’ll appear in your profile, but you can’t edit the post, or withdraw any income it may receive.<br>• You’ll have to be invited to collaborate again if you change your mind.<br>• Decline invite?<br>• Accept invite?<br>• You’re now a collaborator on this post<br>• You’ve declined this invite to collaborate<br>• You’re no longer a collaborator on this post<br>• Pending invites<br>• Can’t invite or remove collaborators<br>• Collaborated with<br>• Who’s in this post?<br>• Invite collaborators<br>• You can only invite 5 collaborators<br>• You’ll no longer be listed as collaborator on this post, and it’ll be removed from your profile.<br>• Leave collaboration?<br>• Creators who accept your invite will be listed as collaborators on your post. It will appear in their profile, but only you can edit the post, and withdraw any income it may receive.<br>• A new way to create with others on TikTok<br>• You can only invite others to collaborate at most 4 times a month<br>• You can only invite collaborators if the privacy settings of this post is set to “Everyone”<br>• You can only invite collaborators if your account is set to public</blockquote><div>This will likely work the same way as it does in Instagram. Users will be able to invite other users as collaborators and they have to accept the invite in order to be added as a collaborator in the Tiktok posts. Declining an invitation and leaving an already accepted collaboration will be available as well. A user will be able to invite upto 5 other users/creators and is limited to inviting only 4 times only in a month. It also says "<i>Creators who accept your invite will be listed as collaborators on your post. It will appear in their profile, but only you can edit the post, and withdraw any income it may receive</i>". The account of the user who is inviting other users should be public and the post to which collaborators are being invited should be available to "Everyone".</div><div><br></div><p>The feature will be a welcome addition for the creators/influencers community. WhatsApp has also been rolling out a better dark mode instead of greenish dark mode. <br></p><p>Among all these one thing that's left for some change is the in-call UI. I am specifically talking about the bottom sheet UI here which hosts the video, speaker, mute and cancel buttons. <p>But WhatsApp might be working on bringing some much needed change in this UI. While messing around with WhatsApp to find if there is anything else WhatsApp might be working on, I stumbled upon this newer change. All the buttons are now hosted in a single circular rectangle and if you see closely, the icons have been also replaced with a filled version of icons. Like the 3 dots icon ••• , tapping on it does nothing. There are some issues with background color as you can see in swtiching to video request interface. </p><p>There is no timeline for roll-out of such changes and we might see them rolling in beta version whenever they are ready. </p></div>

Recently they rolled out a new <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2024/02/Google-Contacts-Messages-on-w.html" title="">contact ringtone page </a>and spotted working on a "<a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/527" title="">Organize</a>" tab which overhauls the old "Fix and manage" tab. </p><p>Google has been rolling out a new Google Contacts version 4.28. I was able to enable the new contact search bar. In the previous version I also <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2024/02/Google-Contacts-Messages-on-w.html?m=1" title="">spotted a UI change</a> which added a "+" sign in the the search bar of Google Contacts. We have all seen this search UI in the Google Play Store. The only change is here is that the microphone icon is replaced with a 3 dots icon which gives you the option to select/select all contacts and the notification icon is replaced with a plus sign which lets you add new contacts. </div><p>Just a few days ago, Google has been <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2024/03/Google-Keep-New-Bottom-Toolbar.html" title="">spotted testing a new toolbar</a> to create new notes which was similar to the floating navigation bar in Google chat. While it was pretty good and recieved positive reactions but looks like Google keep may not be settling on it. There is a new version released this week of Google Keep and I managed to enabled yet another type of new note creation button.</p><p><b>Update</b> : A further look into the code changes reveals that Google completely got rid of the previous floating navigation bar which it was testing a few days ago.</p><p>In the latest Google Keep version 5.24.112, I was able to enable a new floating fab button to create new notes. Tapping the button expands it vertically and you see three options now. First one is to create a drawing note and second one to create a list note and the third one to create a simple text note. </div><div><br></div><div><strike>So it seems like Google might be experimenting with two types of options to replace the old navigation bar. We will see which one will make it to the final. It's been 4+ months since it has been spotted and there have been a lot of things changed since then as WhatsApp continues to make changes to the event creation feature. I am going to share what has changed in these months. Before I dive into the details here are some useful purpose of the event creation feature (in short) - </p><p></p><ul><li>Schedule video/audio calls in groups/communities for discussion about anything like a meeting or just getting in touch with various family members.</li><li>Schedule other plans such as going to somewhere on a trip with family or hundreds of other purposes with location and list of attendees.</li><li>Can be used for reminder purpose in groups chats/communities.</li></ul><p></p>

<h3>1. It's not limited to groups in communities only</h3><p>Initially it was said (vaguely) that the event creation feature may be available to groups in communities only. From what I could see in the internal digging and enabling the feature myself, events can be created in standalone groups as well, having the group in a community is not necessary. <h3>2.  It's not just video calls</h3>
<p> When the event feature was initially spotted, the screenshot shared by WaBetaInfo showed that only video calls can be scheduled in the event. WhatsApp now has added the option to create voice calls. Turning on the "Whatsapp call link" will show a dialogue where you can choose between a video and voice call. This is a great way to schedule both types of calls. <h3>3.  Edit an event, because the plans have changed </h3>
<p> There are always chances of things getting changed after we create an event, like a date or location. The edit event option will allow you to make whatever changes you want in an already created event. You can change the title, description, date, location and other things. Once edited, all attendees of the event will be notified of the event update. <h3>4. See all events in group info</h3>
<p>There may be various events created by different people in groups and may be scattered here and there in the group and may be hard to find or you have to scroll up and down to find it. So the solution is that all the events which are created in the group will appear in the group information page in a horizontal sliding way. <h3>5. Users can respond to events if they want to join</h3>
<p> What's the point of event creation if people can't even respond to an event if they are going to join it, right?  WhatsApp will allow you to join events. The event will show the number of people who are going to the event and additionally if you tap the event card, it will also show the names of people who will be joining and who haven't responded to the event joining.</p>

<h3>6. Get reminders for events and add events to calendar </h3>
<p>WhatsApp is going to fully utilize the "Alarms & reminders" permission of Android to send reminders of the event to attendees. You have to grant this permission only once. It asked me to grant permission when I created the event for the first time. Once the permission is granted you will likely be reminded of the event at the time which is set in the event. I tried to test the feature but it seems like it's still work in progress and WhatsApp didn't send me any notification or reminder. The other thing is that you can add these events to your device's calendar app as well. The event detail page shows the "add to calendar" option just below the date. <h3>7. No one likes cancelling plans, but it happens</h3>
<p>You will have the option to cancel an event as well. You will see the "Cancel event" in the red text in the event detail page. Many people have two or more Google Accounts on their Android phones. Google Messages easily allows switching between these accounts. Google also allows to use Google Messages without an account, but previously it didn't warn users what functionality they could lose if they use it without an account.<div><br></div><div>Google Messages in beta has been quietly rolling a new change which notifies users about what features will not work if they sign out. It also notifies users when they switch accounts because some features are account based. I have the feature enabled in my Google Messages already. You will lose both features as they require a Google Account to work. Additionally there is also an option for users who have profile discovery feature enabled in their Google accounts. It says "<b>Stop profile discovery for this number (recommended)</b>" and is enabled by default. You can uncheck it if you still want to be discovered through profile discovery feature which will allow other users to see your profile picture and name. </div><div><br></div><div>But turning off this option has also some trade-offs as it says in the screenshot that "<b>People who know your phone number may not be able to find you in Google products and services</b>". So the choice is yours. The screen in second screenshot appears when you switch between Google accounts in Google Messages. It just warns about losing two features - Magic Compose & Device pairing. Both feature seems to be account dependent so it's possible that they may not be available in your other account if you switch account.</div><div><br></div><div>This feature seems be available already for some people who use the latest Google Messages beta which have been already started rolling out this week. </div><div><br></div>

There were only two tools named - Backdrop and Restyle. Restyle tool worked by using taking a user input or prompt such as <i>watercolor</i> or <i>magazine collage, </i>and the tools then generated an existing image based on those tools. The backdrop tool also utilises a text prompt and changes the background of the image. WhatsApp only recieved the AI based sticker generation feature.<div><br></div><div>But seems like Whatsapp will also recieve those AI based image editing tools. In the latest beta version of WhatsApp (2.24.7.13), I was able to make the feature appear. Tapping the sparkle icon shows three option named - Backdrop, Restyle and Expand. Using AI to expand images beyond their visible area is not new and there various websites which provide such services. So it will be cool to see it in a social app like Whatsapp. </div><div><br></div><div>Currently these three tools don't work in WhatsApp, tapping on them does nothing. So they might be still a work in progress. The features which meta announced in December were only available to US users. There are various screenshots has been shared by WaBetaInfo with different versions of WhatsApp beta. I will not go into every detail of third party chats, please search on Google.</p><p>I mostly share Google apps related stuff but whatsapp got my attention recently when I started it using again after more than a year. Anyway, third party chats in Whatsapp will allow users to chat with users of other messaging apps such as Facebook, Instagram and possibly more apps. </p><p>While fiddling with WhatsApp internals I managed to enable the third party chats feature partially. There are some pieces are still missing but this little video will provide an overview of how users will be able to onboard and access third party chats in WhatsApp. You might have already seen some parts of the video as screenshots in news. Here is the video of the onboarding process</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="600" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gW2in8zXaQw" width="600" youtube-src-id="gW2in8zXaQw"></iframe></div><p>As you can see in the video, the Third Party Chats will be available under the <b>Account</b> setting of WhatsApp. Tapping on the third party chats will start the onboarding process giving you information about how it's going to work. </p><p>In the first step,you will have to tap the <b>Turn on </b>button, the second screen will show which will inform you about four things - </p><div><ol><li>This makes it possible for people on third-party apps to reach you, including people you've blocked on WhatsApp. </li><li>WhatsApp doesn't share your name or profile photo.</li><li>WhatsApp can't see your messages in third-party chats.</li><li>Some WhatsApp features like stickers, reactions and disappearing messages are not supported.</li></ol><div>On the second screen after tapping <b>Continue, </b>you will see a third screen where you can the third party apps which you want to connect with. In the video, the select screen is empty because WhatsApp is still working on the feature. You have to tap on the <b>Save </b>button to save your selected apps. Pressing the back button/gesture will take you the Third Party Chats settings screen where you can turn off the feature and select apps again. Going back to the home screen you will see a "Third Party Chats" section on top of your chat list. Opening it will show up the chats, but in the video this screen is empty because we haven't connected any app yet. Till now, we have only seen some screenshots from the Google Messages app, but no one is aware of how it's going to work and how it will be different from the Gemini on the web and the Google app on Android.</p><p>With the latest update of Google Messages version <b>messages.android_20240318_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic</b>, I was able to make it work and here are some things you should know about Gemini in Google Messages -
</p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The integration of Gemini in Google Messages is similar to Gemini in the Google app and Gemini on the web.</li><li>It supports extensions like Gmail, Flights, Maps, Workspace and more which are available on web. I asked it to show emails from last week and it showed them.</li><li>It can also give code suggestions. It worked fine when I asked it to write a bash code to list files in a folder. Although there is no "copy to clipboard" thing here, so we have to long press the message and tap the copy button from top toolbar.</li><li>In my testing, it didn't accept any images for input and gave me a "<i>I can't process this file'</i> error. This will probably be fixed in upcoming version.</li><li>It also gives response to particular reactions if you react with certain emojis like thumbs up and angry emojis. </li><li>It can also generate images which is amazing.</li><li>You will need to sign in with your Google account in Google Messages. Gemini will not work without a Google account.</li><li>I was able to add Gemini in Group conversations but it breaks encryption and I am not sure how to trigger it to give responses in groups. </li></ul><p>Here are some screenshots of the chats with Gemini in Google Messages -</p><table align="center">

Google Keep is great app for taking notes, making lists and setting reminders. While it may not be the perfect note taking app, it keeps adding testing and adding new feature, <i>very slowly</i>. The Ai based list generation feature and a quick shortcut on lockscreen to take notes has been in works from some months.
</p><p>In addition to above things, Google also seems to test a new bottom toolbar which might replace the old toolbar for quick notes creation. The feature has been spotted by Danyil Kobzar and enabled it with a flag which he shared on his Telegram <a href="https://t.me/gmsflags_content" title="">channel</a>. I was also able to test the feature on my phone and here is how it looks as compared to the older toolbar - </p>

<p>As you can see in the second screenshot, this toolbar looks similar to floating toolbar which Google has recently <a href="https://www.androidpolice.com/google-chat-busy-redesign-on-android/" title="" target="_blank">rolled out in the Google Chat</a> app. The new toolbar in Google Keep only has three button - to take a note, to create a list and create a drawing/picture note. The voice button and picture button is removed. </p><p>I am not sure what's the actual point of removing the two buttons but I can just guess both of these things can still be accessed inside the note by tapping the plus sign on bottom left. The new toolbar also takes less space in landscape mode and shows more content area. While it's not very difficult or time consuming for setting ringtones for some specific ringtones, but Google thinks that a new separate section for contact ringtones might help you set ringtones for more contacts, more easily.
</p><p>This new "Contact Ringtones" section was <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/392?single" title="">spotted by me</a>, back in December 2023. At that time, Google was still working on it and now after two months of work, the feature is making it to stable version with some minor visual changes as compared to initial UI. <p>The feature will be available inside the "Fix & manage" tab. On the "Contacts ringtones" page you can tap on "<b>Add contact ringtone</b>" button which opens the contacts list. Here selecting a contacts open the default ringtone picker (which is usually the "<b>Sounds</b>" app). After selecting a ringtone for the contacts, the contact will appear on the ringtones page with the ringtone name on the bottom. You also have the option to choose a different ringtone (pencil icon) and delete the ringtone for a contact.</p>

</div><p>WhatsApp on iOS supports voice message transcription since almost a year. It was rolled back to iOS users in May 2023. Apps like Google Messages and Telegram already supports this feature on Android. The feature is free to use in Google Messages and it is kinda paid for telegram users. I think Telegram only allows <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/telegram-update-voice-transcription-similar-channels-3390468/" title="">two voice message transcripts a week</a> if you are not a premium user.</p><p>Anyway, WhatsApp is finally catching up with other apps and with the latest beta version of WhatsApp 2.24.7.7, they started working on it and an APK teardown reveals some strings which hints at this feature. Here are some strings - </p><blockquote>• To enable transcripts, 150mb of new app data will be downloaded.<br>• Enable<br>• Read before you listen with transcripts<br>• "WhatsApp uses your device's speech recognition to provide end-to-end encrypted transcripts. Learn more"<br>• Turn on transcripts</blockquote><div><p>So according to the strings, it first need to download 150mb of data which will be necessary for it to work. It will use the device's speech recognition system to provide the end-to-end encrypted transcripts which means the feature will not affect the encryption process. </p><p>This option will likely be available under the Settings > Chats, just like on iOS, whenever it is rolled out. This is still in work and may appear for beta users of WhatsApp anytime. It sounds good and I am sure a lot of people do this thing already in Google Drive and our device storage as well. As we all know, not everyone is same and they keep files here and there and when they need it, they look in folders or just search them. The other thing - for example, is that I have a file that has some content which belongs to two or three different categories. I know you I can put in one folder and create a shortcut for that file in two other folders. But that's time consuming. </p><p>I am sure this new feature in Google Drive may not solve all your file management miseries but it can make it easier to find files which you need to find easily.</p><h3>Introducing "Categories"</h3><p>Google is working on this "Categories" feature. I <a href="https://twitter.com/AssembleDebug/status/1750182909267591626?s=19" title="">spotted this feature in January</a> but I was not completely sure if it's something Google Drive already have for users (specifically workspace users). As it turned out, this is a completely new feature which will not be limited to workspace users. The continuous addition of new code in Google Drive's Android app related to Categories feature indicates toward it. It will be available to personal account users. This feature basically allows you to put a specific file in different categories. Google workspace users have this 'labels' feature where an admin can create labels and users can apply these labels to files. Here is a <a href="https://youtu.be/skhjP1hqQ40" title="">video about labels</a>. The "Categories" feature is kinda similar but it's not limited to workspace users. <h3>Which Categories btw?</h3><p>Google Drive will let you select from 12 categories. <h3>How it's going to work?</h3><p>According to the changes which I have spotted in the Android app, Google Drive will put all the categories on the "<b>Home</b>" tab. This will make it easier to jump into specific categories. We can put files into categories by tapping the 3 dots icon which is given in front of every file. The 3 dots option opens the context menu and here you will have a "<b>Manage Categories</b>" option. Tapping it opens the categories list and here you can select one or multiple categories in which you want the file to appear. The second screenshot above gives us a hint of the categories section. That screen with "categories" shows up while force stopping and launching Google Drive app again, but as soon as the app is loaded the "Categories" section disappears because it's work in progress.</p><h3>Availability</h3><p>This feature will come for Android, iOS and Web. I know I found it in Android, but Google will make it available on iOS and Web as well, otherwise what's the point of such feature if it's not synced between different platforms. The feature is currently in work and it won't come very soon. Google has recently rolled out an advance search filter feature on iOS which I <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2023/10/Google-drive-.html" title="">found in the Android version of Google Drive previous year in October</a>, it is not released publicly on Android yet. So this category feature might be launched on iOS first and we have to wait a month or two before it gets rolled out to Android, which honestly sucks.</p>

Passwordless passkeys, also known as passwordless authentication or passwordless login, are authentication methods that allow users to access their accounts without the need for traditional passwords. </p><p>In the X/Twitter beta version 10.32.0-beta, there are various references to the passkeys feature. I was able to activate the feature. The feature currently doesn't work, so we have to wait for stable version. Now it looks like Tiktok is trying to copy the Instagram and will be soon launching its own photo sharing platform.</p><p>I usually post Google related stuff on this blog, so posting about Tiktok is a little bit weird. But anyway, waiting for Google's this week of app updates, I decided to decompile Tiktok apk to see what is going on there. It is banned in my country, India, so it's not like I use it regularly :p. </p><p>So after pulling the APKs from apkmirror. I did the usual decompilation process to compared it  with an older version. Then I came across about this new "Tiktok Photos" platform. The latest Tiktok version is 33.8.4 (com.zhiliaoapp.musically) in which I found all the stuff.</p><p>If you are a Tiktok user, you may be well aware of a feature that allows users to post pictures as videos. They appear like regular videos in user feed. You can share multiple photos and users can slide through pictures to see then, just like Instagram. This might not be the best way to share pictures with everyone, so Tiktok decided to create a completely new & separate app called <b>"Tiktok Photos".  </b>Here are some strings from the new version of Tiktok app -</p><blockquote><code>

<p>Above strings clearly hints toward a new app called "<b>Tiktok Photos</b>" and states about sharing photos to <b>Tiktok Photos</b> and reach other like-minded people who enjoy photo posts. Tiktok will likely show all these strings on a page to the user which will inform them about the new photo sharing platform and let them open Tiktok Photos or install Tiktok Photos. </p><p>Other than this code I was able to access some more text which clearly tells about the launch of the new platform - </p><blockquote>n1:text="Sync Your posts to TikTok Photos"</blockquote><blockquote>n1:text="TikTok Photos will be launched soon, we hope to help you gain new audiences in the new app \n\n If the switch is on, we'll sync your public photos to the new app, whether you close the pop-up or not.%s"</blockquote>
<p>Above strings indicates toward syncing your posts from Tiktok to Tiktok Photos along with "Tiktok Photos will be launched soon...".  The posts which Tiktok is talking about here may be the old photos which you have posted on Tiktok already and new ones which you might post through the <b>Tiktok</b> app instead of the <b>Tiktok Photos</b> app. Although this will be optional as user user can turn off the photo sharing with a toggle. Tiktok also wants you to gain more audience through the Tiktok Photos app :p</p>

With the recent version of Google Contacts 4.26, Google is releasing another UI enhancement update which would declutter the contacts details page. </p><p>If you are a WhatsApp or Telegram user, you might have noticed your contact's phone number appearing in contact detail page with WhatsApp or Telegram app icon besides them. <p>The first screenshot shows the current UI and the second one shows the new UI. There are multiple rows of numbers that show up in the contact details page when the contact is synced to WhatsApp and Telegram. The new change moves these numbers into a separate "<b>Connected app</b>" card which could be expanded to show the numbers from both or more apps. This will keep the contacts from getting cluttered with phone numbers if they are synced to multiple apps which make use of such processes like WhatsApp or telegram. </p><p>The change is not limited to WhatsApp & Telegram contacts, so more apps can show up in the list if you have them installed. This change is currently server side and seems to roll out slowly with Google Contacts version 4.26.</p>

One thing that people often complain about Play Store is the lack of downloading multiple apps simultaneously. If you have a fast internet connection like WiFi or 5G, it makes sense to let users install multiple apps at once instead of putting the other apps/games in pending list.</p><p>There are various <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/hhjp2v/google_play_store_just_started_multiple_downloads/" title="" target="_blank">old posts and screenshots</a> on reddit of 3-4 years old Play Store interface showing parallel install functionality. But that functionality or maybe just experiment never reached to all users. But it seems like Google is finally working to bring one of the most requested feature to everyone - simultaneous or parallel downloads.</p><p>With Play Store version 40.0.13, Google is experimenting again with parallel install feature. A few flags have been added in the latest update which I enabled to see if it really works and it really worked. Here are some screenshots of the parallel installing -</p><table align="center">

First one is - parallel install may not work for app updates in the "Manage apps & device" section. If you have multiple app updates available then hitting the "Update all" button or each app's "Update" button will not start parallel installing. Only one app will be updated. The second thing is - Google seems to limit the number of parallel downloads as well, by default there are only two apps that can be downloaded simultaneously. Google has limited this through a flag. So I took the opportunity to change the simultaneous downloads limit from 2 to 5. This worked and I was able to parallel download 5 apps at once.</p>
<p>Other than these two things, I didn't notice anything which is worth mentioning about it. So while the 2 apps download limit may sound ridiculous but Google can change it anytime they want.
