Google will discontinue Google Assistant in March 2026 for users, but it will remain available for now

Back in March, <a href="https://blog.google/products/gemini/google-assistant-gemini-mobile/">Google announced that later this year the</a> classic Google Assistant would no longer be accessible on most mobile devices.</p><p>For now, Android users still have the option to use Google Assistant if they prefer not to switch to Gemini. While checking some information, I came across a<a href="https://support.google.com/androidauto/answer/6348083?hl=en&ref_topic=6348018&sjid=2270659258501960183-NA"> banner on the official Google Support forum</a> of Android Auto that confirms the month and year.</p><p>According to the support page, Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices. Google Assistant will remain available until March 2026.</p><p></p><blockquote>Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices. understand the same commands as Google Assistant and also give you the 
option to speak naturally. Google Assistant is still available for use 
until March 2026. </blockquote><p></p><p>This means you can continue using Google Assistant for about 3–4 more months, after which switching back to it will no longer be possible. Google already <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/removing-google-assistant-features-2024-3401964/" target="_blank">begun removing certain features</a> from Google Assistant back in 2024, and Gemini now supports most of the capabilities previously offered by Google Assistant.</p>

Fast forward 2 (or 3) months and Google has started rolling out these changes for users. This is a server side rollout and I also got the new design with Google TV app version - 4.39.3507.792126911.4-release.<br /><br />While we can not say this is some massive overhaul of the design. Google implemented the changes here and there in the app. Lets start with the changes which are immediately noticeable on the home page of the app.</p><p>The most noticeable change in the app is that the app no longer have a grayish background. Left image shows the old UI and right image shows the new one. The gray color on the tabs at the navigation bar has been changed to a much darker color but not totally black. The search button now have background and it's color changes according to the most dominant color of the movie poster in its background. The color of text now again follows the color from poster and the size of button on the poster is also tweaked. </p><p></p><table align="center">

Here is the first look at Google Pixel's Battery Health Assistant feature

<p>With Google Pixel 9a, Google is bringing a feature called Battery Health Assistant which automatically helps manage the long term health and performance of its battery as it ages. Battery health assistance will also tune the phone’s charging speed 
based on adjusted capacity. You may notice a slight change in battery 
charging performance. Battery health assistance settings on Pixel 9a 
aren’t customizable by the user. Calling it <b>Unsupported Operating System </b>was kinda weird, it could have been more clear with <b>Unsupported Android Version </b>because the APK is supposed to run on Android device and not some other <b>Operating System.</b></p><p>I ignored this whole thing after that but on November 22, apkmirror shared a new version of Google Calendar <i><a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/calendar-2023-46-0-581792699-release-release/" title="">2023.46.0-581792699-release</a>, </i>and the minimum supported version for this version is Android Oreo (8.0). After noticing it, I looked at the <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/calendar-2023-44-0-577681700-release-release/" title="">old versions</a> of Google Calendar on apkmirror and they all have minimum Android 5.0 (lollipop) version support. You can check the version history and minimum supported Android version on Apkmirror by <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/" title="">clicking here</a>. Google provides only an apk and a bundled apks for all supported Android devices/versions. That flag now made some sense and it became clear that Google Calendar will now support Android Oreo and above only. So Google may flip the flag for users running Android 7.1 and below on the old version of Google Calendar whenever Google wants. It is possible that Google may post some information about it in coming weeks. So this is just a big guess based on the evidences which I found. In my testing, when I enabled this flag, the unsupported OS screen showed up just after launching the app and I was not able to dismiss it, it won't let you reach the main calendar screen.   users. It was only available earlier only to some users, just Google's server
  side things. You need Gboard's beta version 9.7 for enjoying this new feature.

  Gboard will follow the system-wide theme and you need to be on a device
  running Android 10. There is no idea if it will make its way to Android 9 or
  older Android versions because they don't have automatic system-wide

  Another thing is worth mentioning that on Android 10, if you change your theme
  to "System Auto", the gboard will only use default light and dark theme. You
  can not set which theme to use when system switches to dark mode or light
  mode, which is an awkward thing. Google still have chance to improve it and
  let users decide which theme user want in dark and light mode but I doubt
  Google will be listening to users this time.

Google removed the face unlock capabilities with Android 10 for some reasons like it was not much secure and Google was working on better face unlock bio metric capabilities which was kinda exclusive only for Pixel 4. So with this all other devices are left out without any kind of face unlocking and there was no way to get it on Android 10. Its a different case if your OEM implemented their own kind of face unlock in Android 10, for example - MIUI. <br />

There are 100's of smartphones and 1000's of custom ROM users who update their phones by using custom ROMs because their OEM stops providing updates which is nothing new in Android world. So people enjoyed face unlocking features on all Nougat, Oreo, Pie ROMs but there was no face unlock with Android 10. With this people had no choice if they want to use face unlock except using Pie or Oreo ROMs which is not the best solution because even in custom ROM communities the developers stops updating old sources for security patches. LineageOS is an kinda a exception in this. <br />
<br />
Pixel Experience is a popular custom ROM with Pixel feel. Even the Magisk developer topjohnwu was impressed with it just because it provided an experience which is mostly exclusive to Pixel Phones. The guy behind Pixel Experience ROM - Jhenrique with his top kek developing skills and knowledge has ported the face unlock from a Motorola device (which has Android 10 with face unlock). <br />
<br />
That means one thing - If you want face unlock on Android 10 then you have to start using a custom ROM. For now, its available in Pixel Experience ROM only but it can be available in other ROMs too if the ROM developers decide (Kang ? Joey ? Habork ?) to add this feature. Face unlock is popular, its not much secure as compared to fingerprint sensor based authentication but its a cool feature which people often asks for Android 10.<br />

I am personally using Pixel Experience Plus version which is an additional version of PE with some extra features. To setup face unlock I had to just go to settings then security and I found face unlock option there. It is not much secure as I was saying but I liked the thing that it can not unlock your phone if you close your eyes. Face unlock won't bother you by any error even if you hold your phone upside down or in landscape mode, it will unlock. It can be little troublesome to use at night but if sufficient light is  available it will unlock the phone. All you have to do for face unlock is to press the power button and show up you ugly or beautiful face. It will unlock by itself and open up the home screen or the app which you were using before locking your phone. <br />

The recent example of such restriction is limiting the video resolution to 480p in India. This is done by YouTube to ease the stress on its servers because a there are millions of people are staying on home due to corona pandemic and the 21 day lockdown by government. This is all fine but restricting users to just watch videos in 480p is not because users can not switch to higher resolution. there is no option above 480p. The first one is that you can not login with you YouTube/Google account in this app. This means that all your favorites and playlist won't appear in this client magically. The one motto of this app is to keep it as google-less as possible. Some folks out there really don't want to be tracked about what you watch and then target you with specific ads and collect all kind of personal identifiable information about you.<br />

Second things is that it can not provide you MP3 files of a video because YouTube does not provide MP3 files which could be downloaded directly. Other sound format that it provide for downloading can be easily played in almost all music player which you can find on play store.<br />
