Google App is testing a new bottom search bar to make searching a little easier

<p>Google app is getting some new features like assistant with bard and recently some visual<a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/366?single" target="_blank"> UI tweaks in the settings </a>and the <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/374?single" target="_blank">real aloud functionality</a>. A few days earlier I shared about Google testing a new <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/338?single">UI tweak</a> related to the chips which we see in the Google app homepage just below the search bar with a tweaked background. 
</p><p>In the latest version of Google app <b>14.48.26.29.arm64, </b>Google is putting the search bar in the bottom, just above the bottom navigation tabs. This change is applied to the Google app's main search bar as well the search bar we see in the search results. This makes it easier to search if you have a phone with a long screen making it easier to reach so you don't have to strech your thumb to reach the top search bar. Other thing to notice here is that the chips like converse, lens are not visible here. This is likely because I have flipped some flags which I shouldn't. So I think those chips aren't going anywhere for now. This thing is in testing for now and some beta testers may see it appear, a wide roll-out will follow if Google gives a green light to it.<br /></p><p>While Google's love for bottom search bar is not hidden from anyone but that love ain't the true love because they ditched the bottom nav in Google Chrome on Android some years ago. But they brought the same bottom bar in Google Chrome on iPhones recently. I doubt if we will see the same for Google Chrome for Android in future. Google Messages quietly added support for Ultra HDR images in RCS Chats

Ultra HDR is a new image format available with Android 14 on supported devices & camera. Basically it's a JPEG image but some additional data added to it when captured on supported devices. With ultra HDR, images can have darker shadows and brighter highlights. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Google Messages is the newest app to take advantage of ultra HDR images and make the messaging experience a lot better for people who use RCS. Google quietly added support for Ultra HDR images back in September just before Pixel 8 series launch. Yupp, I went on an apk compilation spree to find that because I noticed the flag recently inside the apk. The flag is - <i style="font-weight: bold;">bugle.support_ultra_hdr</i>. </div><div><br /></div><div>While I don't have a supported device to test if it really works, I asked a few people on telegram with Pixel 8/8Pro to test it. @spawnpointdes on telegram tested it and confirmed that it actually works. I just asked him to send an Ultra HDR picture using RCS to someone and tap on the sent image to check if it's showing as an ultra HDR photo. While there is no text or sign in the image preview screen to see if it's ultra HDR images, he mentioned that it works because when switching back and forth through recents screen, the image would be dim and then brightens up when the Google Messages's image preview screen is opened. A sudden brighting of the image is the sign of an HDR image.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is one more thing, as Mishaal Rahaan mentioned in an <a href="https://www.androidpolice.com/android-14-ultra-hdr-hands-on/" title="">AndroidPolice article</a>, "many social media services compress images that you upload, which can corrupt or strip the HDR gain map from the metadata."  The good news here is that Google Messages doesn't strip the gain map metadata from images. It strips some of the other metadata though. Google Calendar will no longer support devices running Android 7.1 and below

Creating events, meeting scheduled and creating tasks are some the features that people use on daily basis. It's all good but if you use Google Calendar app on Android devices running Android nougat (7.1) and below, I have a bad news for such users. Recently I <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/291" title="">shared about Google Chrome dropping support</a> for Android nougat as well starting with version 120 in December.<br /></p><p>I noticed this change when I found a flag in Google Calendar - <b>UnsupportedOperatingSystem__enabled, </b>they also added an activity for it.<b> </b>Initially I was not sure why they added this flag but my first guess was that it will show this screen for the unsupported operating systems. Calling it <b>Unsupported Operating System </b>was kinda weird, it could have been more clear with <b>Unsupported Android Version </b>because the APK is supposed to run on Android device and not some other <b>Operating System.</b></p><p>I ignored this whole thing after that but on November 22, apkmirror shared a new version of Google Calendar <i><a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/calendar-2023-46-0-581792699-release-release/" title="">2023.46.0-581792699-release</a>, </i>and the minimum supported version for this version is Android Oreo (8.0). After noticing it, I looked at the <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/calendar-2023-44-0-577681700-release-release/" title="">old versions</a> of Google Calendar on apkmirror and they all have minimum Android 5.0 (lollipop) version support. You can check the version history and minimum supported Android version on Apkmirror by <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/" title="">clicking here</a>. Google provides only an apk and a bundled apks for all supported Android devices/versions. That flag now made some sense and it became clear that Google Calendar will now support Android Oreo and above only. So Google may flip the flag for users running Android 7.1 and below on the old version of Google Calendar whenever Google wants. It is possible that Google may post some information about it in coming weeks. So this is just a big guess based on the evidences which I found. In my testing, when I enabled this flag, the unsupported OS screen showed up just after launching the app and I was not able to dismiss it, it won't let you reach the main calendar screen. Well, you aren't wrong but this new change adds a bit of more animated changes in those existing reactions. This change is a part of Google message beta version <i><b>messages.android_20231121_01_RCOO.phone.openbeta_dynamic</b></i> and may require flipping of flags (yeah, I did flip some flags).<br /></p><p>It's all about message reactions and not that big. If you have used telegram, you may be well aware of the message reactions feature. So usually when you do a thumbs up on an message, you see some animations which burst like a cracker. In case of Google message, the feature is kinda similar and is limited to some reactions only. The animations are bigger as compared to what we see in telegram. Google Messages has been on a roll this month adding new features such as <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2023/11/Markdown-text-formatting-google-messages.html" title="">text formatting</a>, <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/341" title="">chat backgrounds</a> and <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2023/11/blog-post_17.html" title="">noise cancellation for voice messages</a>. I have been leaking all these upcoming changes in Google Messages from some days and today I am sharing about some new changes coming to Google Messages.
</p><p>With beta versions of Google Messages - <i>messages.android_20231117_01_RCO0.phone.openbeta_dynamic, </i>Google message is working on changing the UI of the bottom chat bar and the profile page.  Now the profile UI looks much better and matches the overall design of the rest of the Google Messages app. Here are some screenshots of changes - </p><table align="center">

<p>The bottom chat bar where you type your text,  the <b>+</b> button and gallery icon on the left are changing their positions and now being placed inside the input field layout. The smiley icon is taking taking the place of <b>+</b> icon. Also the voice message icon is being placed alone in the right. Talking about the Profile UI, it is changed completely from plain boring texts and icons to new one with material you theme and elements.</p><p>All these changes which Google Messages bringing recently clearly indicates that Google is working very hard to make people use Google Messages as an instant messaging platform with the power of RCS. These UI changes are currently hidden behind flags and may appear for beta testers anytime soon.</p>

Google Messages bringing markdown support for text formatting

Recently Google Keep gained the ability for text formatting allowing you to underline, bold and do some other things with you notes. Now Google Message is following the same path but in a different way.<br /></div><p>You may have heard of markdown text formatting. According to markdownguide.com, "Markdown is a lightweight markup language that you can use to add formatting elements to plaintext text documents". You can use things like * (star), _ (underscore) to bold and italicize text. There are various other things <a href="https://www.markdownguide.org/cheat-sheet/" title="">you can do</a>. </p><p>In short, Google Messages is adding the ability to parse markdown text. Messages written using markdown syntax will be parsed as formatted text such as bold, strikethrough, italic etc. For e.g. if you send **Bold Text** as message to someone, the other user using Google message will see it as <b>Bold Text</b>. You will also see it the same way. Here is a screenshot of markdown formatting which I tried and it works as expected. </div><p>Not all markdown syntax are going to work but the basic ones works and that what people need. Lists, tables, quotes syntax didn't work in my testing but I think we really don't need them. This works for both SMS and RCS chats. So anyone with Google Messages app can take advantage of this feature.</p><p>I enabled this feature in Google Messages beta version 20231113 using flags and Google is going to roll it out soon to the stable users. Today I found a new feature in the Google Message beta version which can greatly enhance your chat experience with voice notes. 
</p><p><b>Noise cancellation</b> - Yupp, you will be able to activate noise cancellation in your voice recording while you record them. Usually there is background noise in most of our voice recordings which makes hearing the actual human voice a little bit difficult. Google Message aims to solve this by just tapping a "Noise Cancellation" button in the voice recording dialog. </p><p>This feature is available with the newer version of voice recorder which Google is rolling out to people. But the noise cancellation feature may not be active for everyone now. First one is predictive back navigation without actually enabling Predictive back navigation in developer options. The other feature will make it easier to unsubscribe from promotional bulk email sender and bring the functionality which is available on Web only for now. </p><h3>Predictive Back Navigation</h3><p>This is actually a neat implementation of the this feature and you don't need to enable the actual predictive back navigation from developer option for this to work. This will only work on devices running Android 14. In this process, sometimes you have to visit the email sender's website to unsubscribe. This is not the case with its Gmail app on Android. Usually you can unsubscribe from promotional emails by scrolling down on the email and find the unsubscribe link in the email itself. Gmail also provides a "Unsubscribe" option for some emails, hidden inside the 3 dot menu. This option usually automatically sends an email to unsubscribe. </p><table align="center">

<p>With the new change in Gmail on Android, Google will actually place a "Unsubscribe" button on top of the email, just like the web version. Just like web version, Google sometimes will show you a popup to go to the email sender's website where you can unsubscribe. After making its way into different Google apps, Google is throwing a little bit of AI into the Play Store as well. Probably powered by the same AI which powers Bard, Google Play Store is getting a new feature which can help users clear some doubts about games and apps which they install on their Android devices. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) is the term used for such common questions which can come to mind of people about a certain thing. In case of Play Store, Google aims to answer these FAQs of Apps & Games using AI.<br></p><p>Through an apk teardown, I found some strings and flags which hints that Google is working on it and it's not an experimental.  I am not calling it experimental because it will eventually make its way to Play Store after some time, just like Google recently started rolling out a progress indicator (Download buddy) which I spotted almost an year ago. </p><p>So with Play Store version 38.4.12, Google added the following strings - </p><blockquote>Created by AI</blockquote><blockquote>Get frequently asked questions answered by Google AI</blockquote><blockquote>• Answers to FAQs<br>• App FAQs<br>• Game FAQs</blockquote><p>FAQs will show up in details page of each app and game. Recently I shared about "<a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2023/11/blog-post.html?m=1" title="">Set reminder</a>" and "<a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2023/11/Photo-Stack-Feature-In-Google-Photos-First-Look.html?m=1" title="">Photo Stack</a>" features coming to Google Photos. Another feature which I spotted in September was auto archiving albums which archive photos from your albums every 30 days. While I initially thought that this feature will apply to all albums but when I managed to enable the feature, things got more clear. Auto archiving is related to redesign of "Document" section which you see under the "Search" tab. </p><p>So there are two things - "Documents" section redesign and "Auto Archive". The current document section is a grid pattern UI with 12 categories. While the new redesigned document section will have a list UI with only 9 categories. There are minor name changes in names of categories as well and some seems to appear completely new such as "Payment Methods". Payment Method will likely include pictures of your credit/debit cards and maybe other payments methods. Here is a look at the old and new UI in below screenshots.</p><table align="center">

<p>Now let's talk about auto archive. Auto archiving seems to be part of the redesigned document section because the "Archive after 30 days" is only appearing for the categories under Document section. There is a new "Automatic album" tag inside each category indicating that photos are automatically added in each category. Auto archive feature is optional and seems to be disabled by deafult. These feature seems to be working fine for me but there is no words on the roll-out of the feature from Google. I can't provide flag for rooted users because there are more than 700+ encrypted flags for Google Photos and I am not sure which one is responsible for enabling of this feature.

But now I managed to enabled the Reminder feature and I will share how it's going to work.<br></p><p>When I initially found this feature there few strings related to Calendar permission for the Reminder feature. At that time the Calendar permission was not there but Google recently added this permission in recent Google Photos version (I tested this feature in Google Photos Version 6.61) which made it clear that such feature is in works. If you are a regular Google Photos user, you have probably seen the chips which Google shows in bottom of photos such as Copy Text, Lens etc. For the reminder feature you will see the "Set reminder" chip in the same chips list. Tapping on it will open a bottom sheet where you can set the reminder title, select the Calendar/account in which you want to save the reminder, select the from/to date the last thing will have the link of the photo automatically inserted into the text field and you can add additional text here for the reminder as well. During my testing of the feature, the "Set reminder" chip will not appear for every photo. It appears mostly for photos which have texts/dates. So it will show up for the receipts and other documents pictures which you have stored in Google Photos. The feature works perfectly on my end but it's hidden behind a flag for now. I was able to see the reminder created by Google Photos in my Google Calendar app. <br></p><p>This is pretty neat feature and can have various use cases, but it mostly depend on the user. At that time there were just some strings inside apk, but with a new version v6.60 of Google Photos, I managed to enable the feature and I am going to share some information with screenshots and a video about it.</p><p>First of all, according to Google Photos strings -  "Photo stacks automatically groups similar photos that were taken together." So basically it creates a stack of similar photos in your main "Photos" tab. This can help you in keeping your main feed clutter free. There are some things you can do with Photo Stack like pick a top pick photo and delete other photos from a stack. </p><p><strike>Initially I though that this feature can group more than two photos in a stack, but in my testing I only saw two photos in a stack, not more than that. So it can only stack two similar photos and it will help you delete or pick the best one of them. I am not sure if this intended behaviour or anything will change in future. </strike> <b>Update</b> - It can stack more than two photos. </p><p>To enable this feature you have to go to Google Photos Settings > Preferences > Stack Similar Photos and turn on the toggle for it. The other way to enable it is - In the main "Photos" tab, tap on the three dots icon on top left which open a bottom sheet where you can enable it as well. </p><table align="center">

<p>Once it's turned on, Google Photos will automatically stack similar photos together and you will see a stack sign on top right corner of the photo making it easily distinguishable from rest of the photos. When you tap on the stacked photo, a new page will open showing you the "Top Pick" pic (the same pic shown in photo feed) and a bottom bar with all the pics in the photo stack. You will also see a "Top Pick" text of top left corner of the "Top Pick" photo.</p><table align="center">

From the same information bar, you can remove photo from stack with "Remove from stack" option. There is another option Google added in it - "Keep this, delete rest", which means you can delete rest of the photos from stack and only keep the one you are currently viewing. </p><table align="center">

While they might be not feature rich and fast as native apps, they get the things done. They are even installed as native apps showing up in drawer, but they actually run inside webview. </p>
<p>Though these PWAs are installed as apks but they aren't backed up by Google's backup system and therefore can not be restored on your new Android device, leaving you to install them again by visiting those PWAs website again. But that is going to change soon as Google is working on the ability to let you restore all the PWAs you have currently installed on your new device. According to a comment in <a href="https://github.com/chromium/chromium/commit/7e70e2a109fcfe94bb29483bd80bd9afcf630b70" title="">GitHub commit</a> "<i>Only one promo can be shown in one run to avoid nagging users too much. The PWA Restore promotion runs when we've detected that a user has switched to a new device but is leaving behind web apps on the old device. It promotes the idea that the user can restore their web apps from their old device (if they have any), and as such it is most effective when shown shortly after the first-run experience. It is therefore at the front of the list of promotions</i>"

<p>The above comment talks about showing a promo card to a user if it detects that user is using a new device and had any PWAs installed on old device. After digging through some <a href="https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Achromium%2Fchromium+PWArestore&type=commits&s=committer-date&o=desc&p=1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">other commits</a> related to the same feature, when a user taps on the promo, an UI will show up listing the PWAs which user had installed on old device and from there user can select and install them again. </p>
