Google may bring Google Wallet for Indian users

You can also store your payment cards and use tap to pay to pay anywhere Google Pay is accepted. Google wallet is available in various countries but Google never launched it in India. Google let indian users stick with the Gpay which facilitates UPI payments. Tap to pay is not part of it. Also we can not store things such as IDs and Passes in indian version of Gpay.<br></p><p>This might change and Google may launch Google Wallet in India. With the recent version of Google Wallet and Google Play Services, Google has added some flags and code which indicate that Google is working on something for Indian users regarding wallet. </p><p>The first change I noticed recently when going through the Google Play Services apk was addition of two new flags </p><blockquote>• EarlyCheckInWalletIndia__force_enable_feature<br>• EarlyCheckInWalletIndia__enable_feature</blockquote> <p>Both flags are part of <b>com.google.android.gms.pay </b>package in the Google Play Services. This package contains all the flags for features of Gpay/Wallet. Google does server side flipping of flags to enable/disable features for users. So both these flags doesn't really provide any info about what features enabling these flags is going to bring. But the point here is that Google Wallet is not launched in India so why Google added these flags inside Play Services ? </p><p>The answer could be that Google may be working on bringing Google Wallet to India. It can enable tap to pay, store payments and various other features for Indian users which we don't have in the current Gpay for India.</p><p>I found similar flags in the analysis Google Wallet APK - </p><blockquote>• IndiaEligibility__enabled<br>• IndiaEligibility__force_enabled</blockquote> <p>These flags are also disabled by default. But this is again a clear indication of Google working towards something for Indian users.</p><p>In both cases, enabling the flags doesn't bring anything noticeable UI or feature because there is nothing much added besides flags. Google has dogfood/testing versions internally, so the code will show up slowly in upcoming versions.</p><p>The last piece of code I found is also from Google Play Services. In case you don't know, Google was working on Digilocker integration in the Google Files app which was supposed to bring your digital document inside the app such as driving license, COVID certificates, aadhar card. But Google has ditched the effort of bringing these features and they removed the "Important" tab (where digilocker was supposed to be integrated) from the Google Files app completely. So things are going to change and here is how.</p><p>This is the code which I found in the Google Play Services -</p><blockquote>• LOCAL_RESOURCE_PASS_TYPE_INDIA_PAN_CARD<div>• LOCAL_RESOURCE_PASS_TYPE_INDIA_DRIVERS_LICENSE</div><div>• LOCAL_RESOURCE_PASS_TYPE_INDIA_COVID_VACC_CERTIFICATE</div><div>• LOCAL_RESOURCE_PASS_TYPE_INDIA_AADHAAR_CARD</div></blockquote><p>So the word "PASS" along with PAN, DRIVERS LICENCE, VACC CERTIFICATE & AADHAR CARD, is clear indication of the possibility of Google adding support for these directly through Google Wallet using Digilocker, just like Samsung Pass does it. This code is not old as I have checked older beta versions of Play Services where this code is not present. Here is a string which was added in a previous beta version a few weeks ago but I completely ignored it because it didn't make any sense without flags and the other code - </p><blockquote><string="pay_valuable_log_out_digilocker">Logout from Digilocker</string></blockquote><p>This addition was surprising because there was nothing regarding digilocker before in the Play Services. In the words "<b>pay_valuable</b>", the "<b>pay" </b>to Wallet/Gpay and "<b>valuable</b>" refers to the things like Passes, loyalty cards and transit cards. Since we are talking about digilocker, these "<b>valuable</b>" are driving license, vaccination certificate, PAN card and Aadhar card which can be store in Google Wallet after digilocker integration. </p><p>That's all about it. The Google Photos team is continuously working on new features and with the recent version 6.69 of Google Photos, I got hints of some new features which may be coming to Google Photos.</p><p>In the mentioned version, there are some strings which gives us some overview of what's coming. I tried to enable the features with flags using root, but unfortunately they didn't help in bringing up any UI related to the features. But the strings and code which is being added in some previous version of Google Photos indicates that they are actively working on these features. </p><p>The first features, Google is calling it "My Week". Here are strings related to it - </p><blockquote>• <string name="photos_memories_my_week_create_header>Tell the story of your week with My Week</string><br><br>• <string name="photos_memories_my_week_create_setup_button">Set up My Week</string><br><br><string name="photos_memories_my_week_create_description">Keep loved ones close with a photo journal of life’s little and big highlights</string><br><br>• <string name="photos_memories_my_week_picker_description">Invitees will get a memory in the Google Photos app to see each week with photos you pick.</string></blockquote><p>So with "My Week" feature you can invite people to join a memory in which you can select pictures which you want the people to see in their Google Photo's homepage as a memory. This looks like a great addition in Google Photos app, it will make sharing your favourite pictures to your closed ones easy. This way you don't have to create separate albums and invite people which is kinda same thing as the "My Week" feature, but "My Week" puts the pictures on the homepage and is definitely faster than looking for albums inside the app. I am not still sure whether the memories will show on the main memories carousel or in the separate <b>Memories</b> tab. Having them on the main carousel makes more sense though.</p><p>The other feature which is coming to Google Photos is being called <b>real-time albums. </b>We already have shared albums in Google Photos and it even allows to create event album, family album and travel album. But these albums don't have any specific features, they are just normal albums. Now with real-time albums, Google is aiming on the event album with a new feature. Here are some strings related to it - </p> <blockquote>• <string name="photos_ongoing_chip_real_time_album_text">Your real-time album</string><br><br>• <string name="photos_ongoing_chip_dialog_message">We’ll continue to suggest photos for your album until your event or trip is done</string><br><br>•<string name="photos_ongoing_chip_dialog_done">Event is done</string></blockquote><p>As we can understand from the strings, you can start a real time album when you have an an event or going on a trip. You capture pictures while the event or trip is going on, and Google Photos will suggest pictures to add in this real-time album. Well, there is not much variety but you can change between 9 different colors. When Google announced this feature Google it also cleared that the colors syncs between the users.</p><p>With the recent beta update of Google Messages <i>messages.android_20240125_01_RCO0.phone.openbeta_dynamic</i>, I was able to activate the feature using some flags and I tested this with another RCS users who need to have the same flags turned on as well. Once the user picks a color you will see a <b>"Jon Doe changed the theme"</b> text with a <b>Change</b> option which brings up the chat colors dialog again. In the same way when the other user changes chat colors, you will also see the same text with their name (if you have their contact saved). This change works for both one on one RCS and group RCS conversations. There are various features exists in the Google Chat/Space app for workspace users. But I recently stumbled upon a very basic feature while I was messing around with flags - Voice Messages. <br></p><p>Google announced this feature at the <a href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z8FuGQwc-ns" title="">Google Cloud Next on YouTube</a>. It is supposed to be out in the first quarter of 2024. Other than this I only found some other forum post where users are requesting for voice message/voice memo features. </p><p>So looks like Google is already working on voice messages support for Google Chat/Space users. I was able to activate the feature with a flag which showed up the voice message recording UI. The same flag also worked in the Gmail app as well because Google has integrated the Google Chat functionality in it. If you choose to press the mic icon, a voice message recording UI pops up at the bottom and starts recording instantly with waveform UI. You also have a delete button on the left and a stop button on the right. All thanks to the AI. Currently the functionality is available on both web and apps, but the thing here is that you have to write the email prompt yourself using keyboard. What if you can just speak the prompt and let app do rest of the work. On Gmail app for Android, Google is working on this feature which will let you draft emails with voice. <br></p> <p>While many of you can say that on Android, you can just hit the Mic button on your Google Keyboard and do the same thing! There was one more feature that went unnoticed because Google didn't announce it (maybe it was/is WIP!!). While I was able to enable the flag, I had no idea how to trigger that feature. But thanks to <b>Jhowkira</b> on telegram, he managed to trigger the feature by just long pressing the camera icon. I tested this personally in Google Messages version - <b>messages.android_20240104_01_RC00.phone_samsung_openbeta_dynamic. </b><br /></p><p>Selfie Gifs is nice little addition to make your conversations more fun by sending 4 second videos as Gifs. It can be accessed by long pressing the camera attachment icon on the bottom typing bar. Long pressing will open a new UI with a rounded camera frame in center and a camera switch button on bottom which will let you switch between front and rear cameras. </p> <p>The recording will start automatically after you see a 3 second timer. Once it's done you will see a preview UI where you can see the recorded video as gif. Here you have two options - <b>Reset</b> or <b>Send.</b> Pressing <b>Reset</b> will restart the recording process again. If you hit <b>Send</b> button the video will be shared as a rounded gif. Tapping on it will expand the card and you will mostly see only 3 questions with a dropdown arrow, tapping on which will expand the section and show the answer of the question. You will see the <b>Created by AI</b> text at the bottom as well indicating that all these questions and answers are generated using artificial intelligence. You will also have a <b>Hide</b> option, tapping on it will collapse everything and bring you to the initial state with the "Show" button.</p> <p>There seems to be some limitations. In my testing, the FAQs button appeared for limited apps and games only, mostly the popular ones like Google Go, Hay day, Duolingo and many more. FAQs are limited to three questions which are kinda the same for both apps and games. For e.g.<br>• What do people like most about this app?<br>• What are the features of this app?<br>• What is this app about?</p> <p>The feature will likely roll out slowly for users in upcoming weeks. There was not much information about it at that time but in a November Google Play System Update changelog, Google mentioned that it will roll out with Play Store with version 38.3, unfortunately that didn't happen. Google again mentioned about this feature in the changelog of December Google Play System and is now supposed to roll out with version 38.8 of Play Store. I didn't have any luck enabling the feature when I initially found it but with Play Store 38.8, it is now partially working for me after flipping a few flags. So how's it going to work? I haven't seen any other reports about anyone spotting it the wild, so my guess is that it's either limited to very few people now or even if it's rolled out to many people, they will not find it easily.<br></p><p>Just like you can install apps on your connected devices such as your other Android Phone, WearOS, TV, Android Auto and PC, you will be able to remotely uninstall them as well, but it's will not be as easy as installing them. Once available, you will find this feature inside the "Manage" tab which is inside the "Manage apps & devices" page. On the manage tab you have to tap on "✓ This device" and bottom sheet will appear listing all your connected devices, which is kinda same as what you see in the install dialog when you remotely install an app to choose your device. Tapping on any of your device name will fetch the list of all installed user (and some system) apps from that specific device. Here you can tap on the checkbox to select multiple apps or a single app, on selection a delete icon will appear on top right. Tapping on that delete icon will show a popup telling you "1 app will be uninstalled from your (device name)". Sorting by size will definitely help you get rid of apps consuming space on your other devices easily. There are other few things that I want to mention here. The app list which Play Store fetches from my other device was not complete. It was the mix of system apps and user apps. System apps were the one which has updates installed, most of them were Google apps. Not all user apps were there, a lot of them were missing, such as I have Instagram installed on other device but it was not in the list. </p><p>So I guess this was either a bug or maybe the app was not installed from the Play Store. I am not really sure what's the actual issue here but we will find about it once more users get this feature. Now Google is also working on another feature which users requests and need a lot - message editing.</p><p>Google has added some flags for this in the beta version of Google Messages which hints that message editing feature could be real. The flags were added in the beta releases which released in the last week of November. I also did some digging of the Google Message apk and found some codes that give some hints about the message editing feature.</p><p>There were four flags added for this - </p><blockquote><b>bugle.enable_edit_ui<br></b><b>bugle.load_edit_history<br></b><b>bugle.process_outgoing_edits<br></b><b>bugle.process_incoming_edits</b></blockquote> <p>The first flag indicate toward enabling a editing UI for a message which we want to edit. The second flag is about loading the edit history of messages from the message database. The third one seems about processing the edited message once a user edits it and the fourth flag indicating the processing of the edited message for the user who is receiving it. Unfortunately, enabling these flags does nothing for now because this feature is still a work in progress.</p><p>Above was the flag part and let's come to the apk digging part which I did to find some stuff and tried to make some sense out of it. Personally I am not a coder, so I don't understand every part of the process. It would be even difficult for a coder to make total sense of how it works because the Google apps are heavily obfuscated. The database file is called <b>bugle_db</b> which can be accessed if you have root. The said code creates a new table named <b>message_edits</b> in the database. This table contains columns <b>message_id</b>, <b>latest_message_id</b>, <b>original_rcs_messages_id </b>and there are two other columns which are added from some other code in this table - <b>edited_at_timestamp_ms </b>and <b>received_at_timestamp_ms</b>. So this table is probably where Google Message is going to store details of the messages you edit and process them for you and the other users. As far as I know, message editing is not a part of RCS standard by default. End to End Encryption was also not a part of it but Google did it anyway. Its possible that message editing may be added in RCS standard because it is kind of works the same way as message reactions. So having it is not going to be difficult part. Apple also joined the RCS wandwagon and said to work along with Google to work on RCS. </p><p>I have done decompilation of more Google Message apks to check when all this code was added. All this code was added in a beta build of Nov 19. So it's new and shouldn't be mistaken for any old code. As I mentioned earlier, this feature doesn't work for now even after enabling flags because Google is still working on it. Some of these features are already rolling for beta testers. But being a beta tester doesn't mean you will get the features instantly available for you.<br></p><p>The other method of getting such new features quickly is having a rooted device so you can enable flags with apps like GappsMod and GMS Flags. But there a way to get new features working instantly on unrooted devices as well. In this post I am going to explain how you can do it. </p><p>Some of you are probably aware that Google Messages has a separate build for samsung specific devices. Luckily Google has enabled a feature in it which we can use to enable the flags for new features which are added in beta versions. This things is not available in the normal Google Messages beta version which you install on devices other than samsung. I am not sure since how long it's been like this and if it's something intentional from Google. But anyway, who cares, time to spill the beans, thanks to <a href="https://x.com/LinkofHyrule89" title="">Mathew Garbett</a> for tipping and @user_ams007 on discord for initially spotting the change.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">• Things needed </h3>1. Google Messages beta, samsung specific apk (<a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/messenger-google-inc/messenger-google-inc-20231128_01_rc00-release/" title="">Apkmirror</a>). Samsung specific messages have <b>samsung_openbeta_dynamic</b> in the end of package name.<br>2. Working brain and I will not list all feature flags here. Trust me, its more fun when you will explore it yourself. <h3 style="text-align: left;">• Instructions</h3><div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Install the latest Google Messages beta apk from apkmirror which should have "<b>samsung_openbeta_dynamic</b>" in it's package name.</li><li>Open the Messages app and tap on the search icon.</li><li>Type *<b>xyzzy* </b>and press enter/search on keyboard (whole string along with stars). Once you press enter you will see a toast indicating that debug menu has been enabled.</li><li>Now tap on the profile picture menu and you will see a <b>"Debug"</b> option. </li><li>Now after tapping the Debug option you will see a list of option appear. Now tap on the "<b>Values" </b>and then on <b>"Auto-ramp Overrides/Gservice keys..."</b></li><li>You will see all the feature flags available in Google Messages beta version with which you can mess around.</li></ol></div><div>Thats all. Some of you may not like the OneUI style header but we cannot do anything about it. You also have to rely on Apkmirror to sideload this specific Google Messages version whenever someone uploads it. One more thing to note here is that not all the feature flags will work because some of these are work in progress and some depends on a few files which needs to be downloaded by Google Messages.
