There was not much information about it at that time but in a November Google Play System Update changelog, Google mentioned that it will roll out with Play Store with version 38.3, unfortunately that didn't happen. Google again mentioned about this feature in the changelog of December Google Play System and is now supposed to roll out with version 38.8 of Play Store. I didn't have any luck enabling the feature when I initially found it but with Play Store 38.8, it is now partially working for me after flipping a few flags. So how's it going to work? I haven't seen any other reports about anyone spotting it the wild, so my guess is that it's either limited to very few people now or even if it's rolled out to many people, they will not find it easily.<br></p><p>Just like you can install apps on your connected devices such as your other Android Phone, WearOS, TV, Android Auto and PC, you will be able to remotely uninstall them as well, but it's will not be as easy as installing them. Once available, you will find this feature inside the "Manage" tab which is inside the "Manage apps & devices" page. On the manage tab you have to tap on "✓ This device" and bottom sheet will appear listing all your connected devices, which is kinda same as what you see in the install dialog when you remotely install an app to choose your device. Tapping on any of your device name will fetch the list of all installed user (and some system) apps from that specific device. Here you can tap on the checkbox to select multiple apps or a single app, on selection a delete icon will appear on top right. Tapping on that delete icon will show a popup telling you "1 app will be uninstalled from your (device name)". Sorting by size will definitely help you get rid of apps consuming space on your other devices easily. There are other few things that I want to mention here. The app list which Play Store fetches from my other device was not complete. It was the mix of system apps and user apps. System apps were the one which has updates installed, most of them were Google apps. Not all user apps were there, a lot of them were missing, such as I have Instagram installed on other device but it was not in the list. </p><p>So I guess this was either a bug or maybe the app was not installed from the Play Store. I am not really sure what's the actual issue here but we will find about it once more users get this feature. Now Google is also working on another feature which users requests and need a lot - message editing.</p><p>Google has added some flags for this in the beta version of Google Messages which hints that message editing feature could be real. The flags were added in the beta releases which released in the last week of November. I also did some digging of the Google Message apk and found some codes that give some hints about the message editing feature.</p><p>There were four flags added for this - </p><blockquote><b>bugle.enable_edit_ui<br></b><b>bugle.load_edit_history<br></b><b>bugle.process_outgoing_edits<br></b><b>bugle.process_incoming_edits</b></blockquote> <p>The first flag indicate toward enabling a editing UI for a message which we want to edit. The second flag is about loading the edit history of messages from the message database. The third one seems about processing the edited message once a user edits it and the fourth flag indicating the processing of the edited message for the user who is receiving it. Unfortunately, enabling these flags does nothing for now because this feature is still a work in progress.</p><p>Above was the flag part and let's come to the apk digging part which I did to find some stuff and tried to make some sense out of it. Personally I am not a coder, so I don't understand every part of the process. It would be even difficult for a coder to make total sense of how it works because the Google apps are heavily obfuscated. The database file is called <b>bugle_db</b> which can be accessed if you have root. The said code creates a new table named <b>message_edits</b> in the database. This table contains columns <b>message_id</b>, <b>latest_message_id</b>, <b>original_rcs_messages_id </b>and there are two other columns which are added from some other code in this table - <b>edited_at_timestamp_ms </b>and <b>received_at_timestamp_ms</b>. So this table is probably where Google Message is going to store details of the messages you edit and process them for you and the other users. As far as I know, message editing is not a part of RCS standard by default. End to End Encryption was also not a part of it but Google did it anyway. Its possible that message editing may be added in RCS standard because it is kind of works the same way as message reactions. So having it is not going to be difficult part. Apple also joined the RCS wandwagon and said to work along with Google to work on RCS. </p><p>I have done decompilation of more Google Message apks to check when all this code was added. All this code was added in a beta build of Nov 19. So it's new and shouldn't be mistaken for any old code. As I mentioned earlier, this feature doesn't work for now even after enabling flags because Google is still working on it. Some of these features are already rolling for beta testers. But being a beta tester doesn't mean you will get the features instantly available for you.<br></p><p>The other method of getting such new features quickly is having a rooted device so you can enable flags with apps like GappsMod and GMS Flags. But there a way to get new features working instantly on unrooted devices as well. In this post I am going to explain how you can do it. </p><p>Some of you are probably aware that Google Messages has a separate build for samsung specific devices. Luckily Google has enabled a feature in it which we can use to enable the flags for new features which are added in beta versions. This things is not available in the normal Google Messages beta version which you install on devices other than samsung. I am not sure since how long it's been like this and if it's something intentional from Google. But anyway, who cares, time to spill the beans, thanks to <a href="https://x.com/LinkofHyrule89" title="">Mathew Garbett</a> for tipping and @user_ams007 on discord for initially spotting the change.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">• Things needed </h3>1. Google Messages beta, samsung specific apk (<a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/messenger-google-inc/messenger-google-inc-20231128_01_rc00-release/" title="">Apkmirror</a>). Samsung specific messages have <b>samsung_openbeta_dynamic</b> in the end of package name.<br>2. Working brain and I will not list all feature flags here. Trust me, its more fun when you will explore it yourself. <h3 style="text-align: left;">• Instructions</h3><div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Install the latest Google Messages beta apk from apkmirror which should have "<b>samsung_openbeta_dynamic</b>" in it's package name.</li><li>Open the Messages app and tap on the search icon.</li><li>Type *<b>xyzzy* </b>and press enter/search on keyboard (whole string along with stars). Once you press enter you will see a toast indicating that debug menu has been enabled.</li><li>Now tap on the profile picture menu and you will see a <b>"Debug"</b> option. </li><li>Now after tapping the Debug option you will see a list of option appear. Now tap on the "<b>Values" </b>and then on <b>"Auto-ramp Overrides/Gservice keys..."</b></li><li>You will see all the feature flags available in Google Messages beta version with which you can mess around.</li></ol></div><div>Thats all. Some of you may not like the OneUI style header but we cannot do anything about it. You also have to rely on Apkmirror to sideload this specific Google Messages version whenever someone uploads it. One more thing to note here is that not all the feature flags will work because some of these are work in progress and some depends on a few files which needs to be downloaded by Google Messages. This change is applied to the Google app's main search bar as well the search bar we see in the search results. This makes it easier to search if you have a phone with a long screen making it easier to reach so you don't have to strech your thumb to reach the top search bar. This is likely because I have flipped some flags which I shouldn't. So I think those chips aren't going anywhere for now. This thing is in testing for now and some beta testers may see it appear, a wide roll-out will follow if Google gives a green light to it.<br /></p><p>While Google's love for bottom search bar is not hidden from anyone but that love ain't the true love because they ditched the bottom nav in Google Chrome on Android some years ago. But they brought the same bottom bar in Google Chrome on iPhones recently. I doubt if we will see the same for Google Chrome for Android in future. Ultra HDR is a new image format available with Android 14 on supported devices & camera. Basically it's a JPEG image but some additional data added to it when captured on supported devices. With ultra HDR, images can have darker shadows and brighter highlights. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Google Messages is the newest app to take advantage of ultra HDR images and make the messaging experience a lot better for people who use RCS. Google quietly added support for Ultra HDR images back in September just before Pixel 8 series launch. Yupp, I went on an apk compilation spree to find that because I noticed the flag recently inside the apk. The flag is - <i style="font-weight: bold;">bugle.support_ultra_hdr</i>. </div><div><br /></div><div>While I don't have a supported device to test if it really works, I asked a few people on telegram with Pixel 8/8Pro to test it. @spawnpointdes on telegram tested it and confirmed that it actually works. I just asked him to send an Ultra HDR picture using RCS to someone and tap on the sent image to check if it's showing as an ultra HDR photo. While there is no text or sign in the image preview screen to see if it's ultra HDR images, he mentioned that it works because when switching back and forth through recents screen, the image would be dim and then brightens up when the Google Messages's image preview screen is opened. A sudden brighting of the image is the sign of an HDR image.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is one more thing, as Mishaal Rahaan mentioned in an <a href="https://www.androidpolice.com/android-14-ultra-hdr-hands-on/" title="">AndroidPolice article</a>, "many social media services compress images that you upload, which can corrupt or strip the HDR gain map from the metadata."  The good news here is that Google Messages doesn't strip the gain map metadata from images. It strips some of the other metadata though. It's all good but if you use Google Calendar app on Android devices running Android nougat (7.1) and below, I have a bad news for such users. Recently I <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/291" title="">shared about Google Chrome dropping support</a> for Android nougat as well starting with version 120 in December.<br /></p><p>I noticed this change when I found a flag in Google Calendar - <b>UnsupportedOperatingSystem__enabled, </b>they also added an activity for it.<b> </b>Initially I was not sure why they added this flag but my first guess was that it will show this screen for the unsupported operating systems. Calling it <b>Unsupported Operating System </b>was kinda weird, it could have been more clear with <b>Unsupported Android Version </b>because the APK is supposed to run on Android device and not some other <b>Operating System.</b></p><p>I ignored this whole thing after that but on November 22, apkmirror shared a new version of Google Calendar <i><a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/calendar-2023-46-0-581792699-release-release/" title="">2023.46.0-581792699-release</a>, </i>and the minimum supported version for this version is Android Oreo (8.0). After noticing it, I looked at the <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/calendar-2023-44-0-577681700-release-release/" title="">old versions</a> of Google Calendar on apkmirror and they all have minimum Android 5.0 (lollipop) version support. You can check the version history and minimum supported Android version on Apkmirror by <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/calendar/" title="">clicking here</a>. Google provides only an apk and a bundled apks for all supported Android devices/versions. That flag now made some sense and it became clear that Google Calendar will now support Android Oreo and above only. So Google may flip the flag for users running Android 7.1 and below on the old version of Google Calendar whenever Google wants. It is possible that Google may post some information about it in coming weeks. So this is just a big guess based on the evidences which I found. In my testing, when I enabled this flag, the unsupported OS screen showed up just after launching the app and I was not able to dismiss it, it won't let you reach the main calendar screen. If you have used telegram, you may be well aware of the message reactions feature. So usually when you do a thumbs up on an message, you see some animations which burst like a cracker. In case of Google message, the feature is kinda similar and is limited to some reactions only. The animations are bigger as compared to what we see in telegram. Recently Google Keep gained the ability for text formatting allowing you to underline, bold and do some other things with you notes. Now Google Message is following the same path but in a different way.<br /></div><p>You may have heard of markdown text formatting. According to markdownguide.com, "Markdown is a lightweight markup language that you can use to add formatting elements to plaintext text documents". You can use things like * (star), _ (underscore) to bold and italicize text. There are various other things <a href="https://www.markdownguide.org/cheat-sheet/" title="">you can do</a>. </p><p>In short, Google Messages is adding the ability to parse markdown text. Messages written using markdown syntax will be parsed as formatted text such as bold, strikethrough, italic etc. For e.g. if you send **Bold Text** as message to someone, the other user using Google message will see it as <b>Bold Text</b>. You will also see it the same way. Here is a screenshot of markdown formatting which I tried and it works as expected. Lists, tables, quotes syntax didn't work in my testing but I think we really don't need them. This works for both SMS and RCS chats. So anyone with Google Messages app can take advantage of this feature.</p><p>I enabled this feature in Google Messages beta version 20231113 using flags and Google is going to roll it out soon to the stable users. Today I found a new feature in the Google Message beta version which can greatly enhance your chat experience with voice notes.  </p><p><b>Noise cancellation</b> - Yupp, you will be able to activate noise cancellation in your voice recording while you record them. Usually there is background noise in most of our voice recordings which makes hearing the actual human voice a little bit difficult. Google Message aims to solve this by just tapping a "Noise Cancellation" button in the voice recording dialog. You can actually toggle the noise cancellation option at any time. Before you start the recording and while recording as well.  </p><p>This feature is available with the newer version of voice recorder which Google is rolling out to people. But the noise cancellation feature may not be active for everyone now.
