MIUI 11 For Motorola G5 Plus

MIUI 12 is almost here and its pretty much looks like a iOS rip off. iOS like control center and animations are here in MIUI 12.
But here we are not gonna have a discussion about MIUI 12 because its still in beta stage and have major stability issues even on Xiaomi phones.

Well, lets talk about MIUI 11 then.

Its pretty much stable as compared to MIUI 12 at this moment. Since there is no official way to get MIUI running on a Motorola device, all you have left is - Treble. Yes, if you have heard about it, GSIs are the way to experience MIUI on your motorola device.

Motorola G5 Plus have an almost 2 year old treble vendor (thanks to lord Vache), and since then we are enjoying all kind of GSI ports from various OEMs. They are not as stable as the ROMs built from sources, but they are not completely unusable also. Or I just say it depends on the person how many bugs he can tolerate :p.

This MIUI 11 port for Moto G5 Plus is based on MIUI Mix, which is based on Xiaomi.eu builds of MIUI. Its android pie. It is an adfree version of MIUI and provides extra options and customization options as compared to global versions. I am personally using this port from last 3-4 days and I tried to fix as much bugs as possible and make it less bothering to everyone else.

I have converted this GSI into a flashble zip which saved you from flashing vendor and other 69 fixes zip files.

In terms of overall usage experience, its lagfree for me. I can not say the same if you gonna play some games and open 5-6 other apps in background. Enough talking, its getting boring, lets download it.

• When setting up hotspot for first time, change "Device Identification" to "Default", don't cry later that hotspot isn't working if you didn't do this. If you did not do this stepa and turned on hotspot, it will give error, and the only way to solve is by doing clean flash again.
• If you flashing magisk 20.4, then turn on magisk hide from magisk manager settings otherwise you won't be able to pass safetynet.

Pixel Experience - First Android 10 Based Custom ROM With Face Unlock Is Here

Google removed the face unlock capabilities with Android 10 for some reasons like it was not much secure and Google was working on better face unlock bio metric capabilities which was kinda exclusive only for Pixel 4. So with this all other devices are left out without any kind of face unlocking and there was no way to get it on Android 10. Its a different case if your OEM implemented their own kind of face unlock in Android 10, for example - MIUI.

There are 100's of smartphones and 1000's of custom ROM users who update their phones by using custom ROMs because their OEM stops providing updates which is nothing new in Android world. So people enjoyed face unlocking features on all Nougat, Oreo, Pie ROMs but there was no face unlock with Android 10. With this people had no choice if they want to use face unlock except using Pie or Oreo ROMs which is not the best solution because even in custom ROM communities the developers stops updating old sources for security patches. LineageOS is an kinda a exception in this.

Pixel Experience is a popular custom ROM with Pixel feel. Even the Magisk developer topjohnwu was impressed with it just because it provided an experience which is mostly exclusive to Pixel Phones. The guy behind Pixel Experience ROM - Jhenrique with his top kek developing skills and knowledge has ported the face unlock from a Motorola device (which has Android 10 with face unlock).

That means one thing - If you want face unlock on Android 10 then you have to start using a custom ROM. For now, its available in Pixel Experience ROM only but it can be available in other ROMs too if the ROM developers decide (Kang ? Joey ? Habork ?) to add this feature. Face unlock is popular, its not much secure as compared to fingerprint sensor based authentication but its a cool feature which people often asks for Android 10.

I am personally using Pixel Experience Plus version which is an additional version of PE with some extra features. To setup face unlock I had to just go to settings then security and I found face unlock option there. It is not much secure as I was saying but I liked the thing that it can not unlock your phone if you close your eyes. Face unlock won't bother you by any error even if you hold your phone upside down or in landscape mode, it will unlock. It can be little troublesome to use at night but if sufficient light is available it will unlock the phone. All you have to do for face unlock is to press the power button and show up you ugly or beautiful face. It will unlock by itself and open up the home screen or the app which you were using before locking your phone.
YouTube is one stop entertainment and information hub for millions of people. It got all type of content on it for almost everyone. One side of YouTube is that you get all quality content on it (if you ignore the bullshit) as well as a hell lot of advertisements with every YouTube video. These are the most annoying type of ads that pop ups while watching videos and they almost ruins the video watching experience. Most people don't know how to get rid of them because all android phones comes with YouTube app preinstalled and you have to live with that because people don't bother to find how to get rid of advertisements from it, most people are okay with it, not everyone is a geek. Well, you can also purchase youtube premium to get rid of ads but everybody can afford that on monthly basis.

Of course you can get rid of YouTube advertisements on web version of YouTube by using an adblocker like Adblock plus or uBlock origin but it is very hard to get rid of advertisement from the official android app. These adblockers can not block inside the youtube app. This is why apps like NewPipe exists. It can do more than just ad blocking.

NewPipe is an open source and free YouTube client for Android. The main purpose of it is to get rid of various kind of restrictions that the official YouTube app puts on users. The recent example of such restriction is limiting the video resolution to 480p in India. This is done by YouTube to ease the stress on its servers because a there are millions of people are staying on home due to corona pandemic and the 21 day lockdown by government. This is all fine but restricting users to just watch videos in 480p is not because users can not switch to higher resolution. there is no option above 480p. With NewPipe such restriction can be bypassed by using NewPipe no matter which country you live in.
First I am going to list all the features that NewPipe offers then I will tell about some things that NewPipe can not do as opposite to official YouTube app.

Downloads -

This is not available to download from Google Play Store because it violates some google play store policies. Same goes for all the YouTube clients on the internet.
1. Download from Fdroid Store
2. Download from official GitHub repo
2. Direct apk link to latest version (Fdroid)

Features of NewPipe -

Small and lighweight app.

Video downloads - Choose between video, audio or captions download, select the most suitable file format, download the resolution you need.

No proprietary Google APIs, it only send information which is required to get the video and channels.

All information like search history and favorites is stored on your device locally.

Play in background - An advance resizable picture in picture mode. You can also just play music of video in background, good for song playlists.

Subscribe to channel with just one click. Easily import and export your local subscriptions from other devices.

Bookmarks - Create your own playlist, import playlists, mark video as favorites and import all this data on other device to save time.

Search suggestion and youtube watching history for easy access to what you have watched earlier.

It is free, opensource and have 63 language support, updates are guaranteed if something breaks.

oh, if you like to read the often not so interesting and hate filled YouTube comments, this app can do that too.

All are these are the nice features which you sure want to try.

Now lets talk about the things that you can not do with this. The first one is that you can not login with you YouTube/Google account in this app. This means that all your favorites and playlist won't appear in this client magically. The one motto of this app is to keep it as google-less as possible. Some folks out there really don't want to be tracked about what you watch and then target you with specific ads and collect all kind of personal identifiable information about you.

Second things is that it can not provide you MP3 files of a video because YouTube does not provide MP3 files which could be downloaded directly. Other sound format that it provide for downloading can be easily played in almost all music player which you can find on play store.

There might be some things that you may miss from while using this client but they are not something you can not live without. Considering all the good features it provides, it is my personal on the go app for accessing YouTube.

You can find more information about it on the official NewPipe website and check out its source code on GitHub.
Google Play Store is one stop shop for purchasing and downloading apps and games. Google Play Store has gained a lot of momentum in term of getting new features like dark mode, auto playing videos of games and apps and small size app delivery system which helps in delivering apps for targeted device considering its DPI and Architecture like arm/arm64 or x86. Having all these features means you are tied to play store and have to use google play services to get all these things.

There are folks out there who hate Google Services and use it as less as possible, just because of maintaining privacy and being mined by google for personal data collection through Google Play Services. These are the people who prefer open source app more. Other than these folks there are people who likes to get taste of new features rolled out in beta version of apps. Google Play Store allows into opting beta testing but most of the time, the beta testing is limited and you can't join beta testing. It also helps in downloading Geo-restricted apps.

To fulfill the needs of both of these types of people, there are some services which can help you out. I am going to list just two services which I personally found to be trusted and secure. There are thousand of users who trust these services. Of course there are thousand of websites which can provide you with apps and APKs, but those APKs you download from any random site are often not secure.

1. Aurora Store App

Aurora Store is an alternate to Google's Play Store, with an elegant design, using Aurora you can download apps, update existing apps, search for apps, get details about in-app trackers, spoof your location and much more.

Its a neatly material 2.0 designed app store. It is an open source store so it can be trusted more than the other third party closed source app stores.

On first install, you will be asked to login. There are two options here, you can login as an anonymous user or you can use you own google account to login. Its recommended to use anonymous option because your own google account might be suspended if google feels something fishy. Its because it violates some google policies. So its better to login as an anonymous user or use any temporary useless google account.

After this you get a nice white eye blinding user interface (Dark options available :p) with top apps and top games suggestions. You get a tabbed interface below screen having Updates and Categories options. Its easy to know what they do. You can now start searching and downloading APKs of almost all apps.

Features-

1. Filtering google apps, which removes google apps from search results.

2. Auto Installation after downloading.

3. Automatic deletion of APKs after installation.

4. Different installation methods. Native installer, Root installer and installing using aurora services.

5. Proxy support.

6. Themes (light,dark and black).

7. Search using package names.

8. Spoofing your device.

9. Blacklisting and favorite apps

2. Apkmirror.com

Its not an app, its just a website. Its kind of of crowdsourced apk website where user and app developers both can submit their apps. It allows user to upload apps so you might ask question that whats the guarantee that all apps they are uploading are not modified in any way ? The answer is - Every app that is uploaded on it is verified before it appears on the website.

Apkmirror makes sure that the cryptographic signatures for new versions of all previously published apps match the original ones, which means apkmirror know if uploaded APKs were signed by the real devs or someone pretending to be them. APKMirror.com has been protected from the Janus vulnerability in Android from day one. For new apps that have never been uploaded to APKMirror.com, they try to match the signatures to other existing apps by the same developer. If there’s a match, it means that the same key was used to sign a previously known legitimate app, therefore validating the new upload. . If they see no matches, we try to obtain and compare to a version of the same app from the Play Store or another verified location. If it’s a beta, they will try to get into it. If they can’t, they will attempt to contact the developer. If they are unable to verify the legitimacy of a new APK, they will simply not publish it.

Why use apkmirror ?

1. Allow updates to popular apps that are rolling out slowly and may not yet be available to you to be downloaded and installed sooner.

2. Get around geo-restrictions and sideload popular apps that may not be otherwise available in your country.

3. Provide an archive of popular applications along with changelogs and descriptions, so that you can roll back to an earlier version if a new one starts crashing or removes features you’ve grown to enjoy. You can also use the archive for research purposes to compare changes from one version to another, for example.

4. Allow for alternate distribution of select applications, at the discretion of our management and editorial teams.

apkmirror is such a great website and a lot of people keep asking for an android app of it. According to apkmirror devs, it is in work in progress. So you might see a new app sometimes.

I hope you liked the article, please share to your friends and let them know about it. Also tell them to stop fu..ing downloading apps from random websites :p.
Update 3:Added 8 new themes
Update 2:Added Liv Dark, PitchBlack
Update 1:Added Valerie, Flux

Substratum provides the ability to theme your system and third party apps. Substratum has been here since android nougat and its still being managed. It was possible for people to use substratum even without root , but only upto Android 8.1. With Android Pie google has restricted the use of overlays on non-rooted devices. There is no to install them without root.

So now if you are on Android 10 and want to use substratum themes then you need a rooted device. <strike>At this moment of writing this, Android Q is still in beta stage and has been available to the app developers and for different devices for testing their apps and giving feedbacks.</strike>

There are new themes started popping up for Android 10 on play store. I will list all the Android Q supported substratum themes here in this post once they come out and will try to keep the post updated.

For using substratum themes on Android Q , you need to be rooted with Magisk and need to install the Substraum Lite app. This is the lite version of the popular Substratum theme engine. The main substratum theme engine app does not support Android Q as of now but we can expect to get it working in near future. Substratum lite supports Android Q and still being developed and improved for better compatibility with android.

How to apply themes with substratum lite -
Make sure you have Magisk and a Android Q compatible theme installed.

Install the substratum lite theme engine from play store.

This app will automatically install its magisk module.

Reboot

Open substratum lite again and click the theme you installed.

Install all overlays and reboot

Open substratum lite and click on Manage , select all overlays and enable them.

Enjoy

List of themes -
1.
Ethereal -
This theme is in beta testing (update: out of beta and stable now) but it works really well android Q. I have used it on Q personally, its a simple theme with most of the popular apps theme support. The best things about this is the the custom icons, simple and minimal. Unlike other themes size of this theme is very just about 3-4 MB.<strike> You need to join the beta testing in order to use this theme on Q.</strike> Its a paid theme.

Name

Ethereal

Download

Play Store

2.
Outline -
This theme is also in beta testing (update: out of beta and stable now) but it works really well android Q. This is the white version of the Ethereal theme. <strike>You need to join the beta testing in order to use this theme on Q</strike>. Its a paid theme.

Name

Outline

Download

Play Store

3.
Outline X -
This is not a theme, it is just an extension of the Outline and Ethereal themes. It provides more color options to choose from and some other tweaks for the theme. You can even generate Telegram and Telegram X themes from it.

Name

Outline

Download

Play Store

4.
Substweaks -
This is also not a theme but it provides a variety of tweaks for for the user interface. It might not be fully supported on Q because its not updated from some time but you can give a try. I have personally tested this but not all the options from it. I just used it to change the number of columns in notification bar and it worked well for me.

Name

Substweaks

Download

Play Store

5.
Valerie -
Valerie is a well known substratum theme due to the wast numbers of custom icons, colors and customizations options. It supports AOSP Android 10 for theming just like the rest of the themes I mentioned above. It also supports OxygenOS based on Android 10. This is also a paid theme.

Name

Valerie

Download

Play Store

Update: Its been 3 months since I wrote this tutorial when Android 10 was in beta stage. Now it out of beta and appearing on different devices now. I am updating the installation steps and you do not have to read everything written below, its outdated. Just jump to installation steps and what you need.

Before you jump to reading instructions, the most important thing I want to tell you is that you need ROOTED device in order to use substratum on Android Q Beta. With Android Pie google has blocked all ways of installing overlays saying that - The Overlay Manager Service (OMS) is intended for device manufacturer's use. OMS, in its current form, is not designed to be a generic theming feature.

With Android Q, google has changed many things most of them are regarding the internals such as dynamic system partitions. Magisk dev TopJohnWu has already succeeded in rooting Android Q and most of the device running Q beta can be rooted easily with magisk. Google already have implemented a system-wide dark theme and most of the apps are adopting the dark themes now. One might feel that this dark mode in Android Q has eliminated the need of substratum themes, this might be true to some extent but the variety of customization is more bigger with substratum themes.

I was using the Android Q beta GSI by erfan and found that due to some issues substratum and substratum lite were not able to install overlays. At this moment substratum app does not work properly with Q which may be rectified in future but for now I found a workaround to install susbstratum themes. There are not many Android Q compatible themes as of now. The only theme that I used on Q is ethereal. Join the beta of this themes to use the Android Q version.

Before you proceed to use this method I suggest you to use Substratum Lite app to install substratum themes. Try it once because it may work for you , if it does not work properly or the overlays not getting installed after building and reboot, then you can use this workaround to apply substratum themes.

What You Need
1. Substratum Lite
2. A device running Android 10 (Q) which is rooted with Magisk.
3. A android 10 compatible theme. Check list of Android 10 supported themes here.

Instructions

1 • Install all required apps as mentioned above.

2 • Launch Substratum lite and click on the theme.

3 • Select the overlays you want and build them. You might see a dropdown selection just on top after clicking on the theme. Just select Android Q/10 from it, if its not there then ignore.

4 • Reboot

5 • Open substratum lite and in manager tab you will see all the overlays. Just enable them and your theme will get applied.

The Best Free/Paid Custom Kernel Managers For Android

Its no doubt that if you are reading this then you might be searching for some of the best kernel managers to tune kernel settings to get the maximum or balanced performance out of your phone. Other things which I am sure of is that - you know about root, installing ROMs and Kernels. Thats a good start and I don't need to explain you about kernel and root.

A kernel manager allows you to tweak the settings of your device at the kernel level. A kernel is the heart of your phone and you need to take care of it sometimes to keep everything working well and fluid. Most of the Android devices are shipped with a default kernel which are already tuned for best performance but that might be not true for all. An average user does not care about much these things and maybe do not know about these things. All these stuff for the nerds. So a default kernel which is shipped with devices does not provide much options for users to tweak the settings, meanwhile a custom kernel opens a vast array of options for tweaking.

With custom kernels you can tweak the CPU/GPU speed , manage the screen colors, get options for optimizing sound controls at kernel level and a lot of other things. It is not like that you will get all these options in a custom kernel automatically, for this the developer of that kernel has to add all these things in kernel. You can have more or less features compared to other custom kernels.

Since we are looking here for kernel managers, then we do not have much options to choose from. Personally I found 3 kernel managers which serves the purpose of tweaking kernel very well. One of them is free and 2 are paid. So lets start with the free one.

1. SmartPack Kernel Manager
SmartPack-Kernel Manager is a heavily modified version of official Kernel Adiutor (KA), which is originally developed by Recognized Developer @Grarak. Kernel Adiutor has been abandoned and have not received any update from July 2018. Since it was an open source project ,so a new dev SunilPaulMathew picked this up and has been improving it since then. This is not available to download from play store , you need to download this from the app release page on github. Interface of the app is pretty simple and settings are divided in section using a sidebar. The best feature of this app is - Custom Controls. With custom controls you can even add support for the things which has been added in kernel but are not supported by kernel manager yet. You can read more about these controls in the app itself. They are not easy as they seems because you need some knowledge of shell scripts.

You can also save the kernel and devices logs to your sdcard using the export logs option in settings.

As I said earlier the features you will see in this app regarding the tweaks of kernel depends on you custom kernels. All I can say is that it supports most the things which you need to tweak if your custom kernel supports it. The other features which are available for all are -

Dark Mode

Dark Mode

Option to flash recovery zip files while running Android OS, that is even without rebooting to custom recovery.

SELinux Switch.

GPU and CPU Frequency live stats and their usage

Custom Controls

Build Prop Editor

Profiles with tasker, allows you to tweak settings automatically when an specific even occurs, like launching a game or an app.

2. FK Kernel Manager
This is a paid app and one of the most popular kernel manager out there. It has a nice and modern which I think is needed for the tall display devices. It has its navigation bar at the bottom of the app and makes it easy to reach settings and other options. It also provides live CPU/GPU speed , input/output speed, info about wakelocks, RAM, Zram, thermal temperatures of different things and kernel logs too.

It has per-app profiles support which is the best things. You can make and profile with different setting and save it. These settings will get applied automatically when you launch that app for which you made that profile. It has a script manager which allows you to write a shell script and it will get automatically executed every time your phone boots. You can import and export these scripts easily from/to storage.

It has a nice dark mode by default but you can that to light from settings. If you enable the battery monitor , it will start showing you the battery stats in notification bar which details of idle battery drain and on screen usage drain percentages. Its a very useful feature for me.

Files and instructions has been updated to install Android Q Beta 5 now.

Android Q beta 4 is recently released by google bringing new features, UI improvemets , new animations a lot of things which were hidden or we can say needed use of adb to bring them out.

I earlier posted Q beta 2 installation guide but didn't post anything related to Beta 3 because it was not much stable and had more issues than beta 2. In ths guide I am gonna tell you how to install this Q beta 4 on your Moto G5 Plus.

The most important thing I want to tell you is that if you use magisk a lot ,even just for root, then its not for you. The things is - Magisk is working for root but its creating system unstablitity issues. You might face random crashes , freezes and lag because of it. So choice is yours :p . [Beta 5 - Use magisk canary build, everything is fine with it]

I hope you have all the basic knowledge of Treble, GSI, Flashing . If you don't know about all this please learn them about first, Google is your friend.

It is going to be a little bit of long process to setup this GSI and get everything running perfectly. This GSI itself is made with a lot of hacks and Android Q is still in beta stage. I will try to explain everything simple as much as I can, but I hope you know the basics of installing a GSI.

Requirements
1. Patience, You really need this while setting up Q on G5 Plus.

Downloads
1. Pixel GSI (Extract the img inside it)
2. Pie Vendor New .
Its a TWRP backup, extract it and place it in TWRP/BACKUPS/*deviceid*/HERE
3. Google Play service apk
4. Magisk Canary
5. Latest TWRP
6. Zygote Fix V2 and Q-Beta-5-Fixes.zip

How to flash -
• Extract the GSI and you will get a img file out of it. Extract the Pie Vendor and place it at right place as I told in downloads section.
• Make sure you are already on Latest TWRP which supports both treble and non treble roms.

1. Boot into TWRP , click on restore and you will see the pie vendor backup folder (if you extracted and placed the files at correct location) .

2. Tap on the Pie vendor backup and restore the boot and vendor.

3. Now go back and tap on Install and go to the folder where you extracted the img, after going there tap on the Install Image button given in bottom right, select the Pixel Q img then choose system image and swipe to flash it.

4. Now flash the Q-Beta-5-Fixes.zip

5. Flash the Fix_Zygote_V2 zip and Magisk

6. Reboot and wait until you reach homescreen.

7. Reboot to recovery again.

8. Flash the Q-Beta-5-Fixes.zip again and reboot.

Now you have reached homescreen , now next thing is to install google play services and get rid of the notification showing up in notification panel. Change the wallpaper also because it will lag a lot because of live wallpaper which is given by default.

Installing Google Play Services -
1. Just install the apk of google play service with the default files app.

No files showing in third party apps/File managers ?-
If you got into this issue follow these instructions- using root
1. Install Terminal Emulator
2. type su -c sm set-isolated-storage off and press enter, your phone will reboot after this.

If you want to do this adb , then connect your phone to pc and make sure your phone is showing up in terminal. If that right then type the following line and press enter -
adb shell sm set-isolated-storage off
Your phone will restart after this and you will be able to use apps which are not detecting storage.

Notes
• Moto Fingering gesture for home/back/recent works as well as chop chop works.Flash any treble compatible kernel for these to work. Moto Actions option in settings will force close always.

Bugs
• Google camera settings/Video recording force closes. Moto cam works but video recording broken.
• It won't pass safetynet.
• There maybe more other issues.

Credits -
Vache, for the Pie vendor.
Erfan Abdi - The man behind pixel GSI, thanks to him.
Updated on - 8th June 2020

Most of the people may not understand the meaning of title this post but if you ever read about Generic System Images i.e GSI then you have understood it. Back in kitkat, lollipop and Marhsmallow days people used to port ROMs, they still do from other devices with similar specifications. Its a tedious work to find phones with most similar specification and OS version. After the implementation of Treble in Oreo, it has become very easy (kind of) to port OEM specific systems. In easy words - You can port MIUI from Xiaomi, OxygenOS/HydrogenOS from One Plus, ZenUI, ZUI , Nubia UI and some more. Well, you need a treble supported phone with either 8.1, 9.0 or 10 Android Version. These GSIs will not work on Pre-Oreo Versions of Android.

ErfanGSI tool by developer Erfan Abdi is the best tool available for porting OEM specific ROMs. You can build a GSI just in just one or two minutes once you understood how it works. It is very user friendly tools where you have to just type some commands and tool will handle the rest of the porting process. Don't expect a perfectly working GSI from this tool because all OEM specific systems are different and system structure varies with each different device specially when the processor is different. Bugs will depend on the treble ROM of your device as well.

This guide is intended for users who have some idea about using linux/Ubuntu or Cloud platforms such as Google Cloud. Its possible to build on Mac as well, since I have no about it I am not going to tell about installation on Mac. This guide only ports the OEM systems which are on Android version 9 and 10. You can not port an Oreo firmwares from other OEMs with this tool. This GSI tool support building of Aonly and AB partition type GSI. It will automatically output both version, if you want to build Aonly version or AB only then you have to use some different command which you will see later in this post. If you are complete noob and have no idea about these things ,just head over to google and read about them.

The system you need to build GSI -
1. A powerful PC , 4GB RAM and dual core is not enough but it may take a lot of time. Higher the RAM and Cores lesser the build time.
2. A good internet connection , needed for downloading the OEM specific Zips which are usually more than 1GB. You can work with locally downloaded firware zips as well.
3. Ubuntu OS on your PC (thats what I use).
4. A working brain.

If you have all needed things above mentioned , I am considering that you have a good working PC setup. Now we will move to next steps of Installing some required things which will be used by the tool.

Open the terminal on your PC

First we will clone the repo with all submodule repos. It will take time in cloning and everything is around 500-700MB.

git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/erfanoabdi/ErfanGSIs.git

Second- Now after cloning we will move to ErfanGSIs directory with
cd ErfanGSIs

Now we going to install all the packages which are required for building the GSIs from this tool. Its fairly simple, just type -

bash setup.sh
If you face issues related to permissions during package installing the use sudo to execute the script.

When everything is above is installed, you are ready to build your GSI.

The next step is finding the OEM specific system zips. These are basically the OTA zips which are released by smartphone companies to upadate their phones. All you need to find is a full OTA zip which is based on Android Pie. One Plus releases all OTA zips on their website, you can find other OEMs update zips by searching on google. You need a direct link of the URL of zip or you can download the OTA zip to your PC as well. I will tell both ways of building GSI directly from a URL as well as from the OTA zip which you have downloaded locally on your PC.

The name of systems (Android Pie/Q) which are supported by ErfanGSI tool. -
1. Android Q/10
2. ColorOS
3. Flyme
4. Generic
5. MIUI
6. Nubia
7. OneUI
8. OxygenOS
9. Pixel
10. Xperia
11. ZenUI
12. ZUI

"Generic" tag is used for building GSIs based on AOSP. You can build GSIs from custom ROMS such as Havoc, Pixel Experience and more.

Generating GSI from a URL
For example if you want to generate GSI of a One Plus 7 pro OTA/Firmware, then just make sure you are in the ErfanGSIs directory first, then enter this command -

sudo ./url2GSI.sh https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/OnePlus7ProOxygen_21.O.07_OTA_007_all_1905120542_fc480574576b4843.zip OxygenOS

The above command contains 3 things. First is the url2GSI - which is a bash script that handles rest of the things. Second is the URL of the firmware (Just replace it with a any OnePlus firmware link you want), third is the type of the system/Firmware, it is basically the name of the system which I have written in list. It can change accordingly to the firmware which you are trying to port. Like if you porting a MIUI firmware then you have to type MIUI instead of OxygenOS. Above command build both A and AB both version of GSI. You will get your GSI img in the out directory. These are usually img files over 2GB. You can compress them with 7z before uploading on the internet.

Compressing with 7z
Just go the out folder and enter the 7z archive name and the name of the img file -
7z a [archived-filename] [names-of-file-to-be-archived]

Like if I have an img file named HydrogenOS-Aonly-9-20190614-ErfanGSI.img , I will enter this -
7z a HydrogenOS.7z HydrogenOS-Aonly-9-20190614-ErfanGSI.img

Generating Aonly or AB only GSI

Suppose you have Aonly device and you don't want to build AB version then in this case you have to use the command like this -
sudo ./url2GSI.sh https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/OnePlus7ProOxygen_21.O.07_OTA_007_all_1905120542_fc480574576b4843.zip OxygenOS Aonly

This will make only A vesion of GSI img. The same way you can use AB tag for building AB GSI img.

Modifying System Before Building GSI
With this method you can also modify the system before getting the final GSI. It is useful when the system is filled with bloat and you want to keep the GSI size smaller in order to fit into the system partition of your device.
In this I am using the url of OP6T firmware.

Make sure you are in ErfanGSIs directory. I am using all commands with sudo to avoid any kind of permission/access error.
1. This steps include the downloading of the firmware. You can use this same method on locally downloaded zips. Zip will be downloaded in downloads folder. Ignore all the errors you get after executing this command.
sudo ./url2GSI.sh https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/OnePlus6Oxygen_22_OTA_031_all_1905281326_bc947291e7ba4ce3.zip

Do not type the firmware/system name in the end like we did earlier.

2. This step unzips the zip contents and converts the system to system.img and stores the system.img in cache directory.
sudo ./zip2img.sh downloads/temp.zip

3. Now make an empty system folder in ErfanGSIs directory where we will mount our system.img
mkdir system

4. This step is to for mounting the system.img to system folder. Once mounted you can make changes in system before building the final img.
sudo mount cache/system.img system

You will see a system folder now with all the contents of system. Make whatever changes you want and proceed to next step.

5. This step will give the final output of GSI img in the out folder. You can make changes in the commands according to your use.
See the basic structure of this command -
./make.sh [path to GSI system] [firmware type] [output type] [Output Dir]

-Path to GSI system: Mount GSI and set mount point
-Firmware type: Firmware mode, it means the name of the system like MIUI, ZUI, ZenUI, OxygenOS etc(see list above in post)
-Output type: AB or A-Only
-Output Dir: set output directory, we don't need it mostly because without this the img output will be in "out" folder. You can change it as you like.

Now everything is done , so my final command will look like this for OxygenOS GSI build. I am making Aonly img here. If you want to build for AB devices , just use AB instead of Aonly. If you want both , don't write Aonly or AB
sudo ./make.sh system OxygenOS Aonly

thats it, you will get your img in out folder.

Notes
1. You will not be able to build Android Q GSI because the system does not mount properly due to changes from google in the factory images of updates. This thing only applies to Android Q on Pixel Smartphones and Oneplus 7/7T. These phones comes with dynamic partitions and building from these requires some hacky workarounds. If you are still interested in building from these devices you can check out the MakeDynamic.sh script here.
2. To build HydrogenOS you should use OxygenOS:HydrogenOS as the system/firmware type name.
3. Some GSI may need for a patched surfaceflinger to boot. This is fixed now and ErfanGSI can patch surfaceflinger automatically when booting.
If you get isHDRlayer error in logs or tombstone crash. Then you need to patch it, the tutorial is given here to patch it - Fixing isHDRlayer
4. ColorOS is not booting for most of the devices at this moment.

There are various tools to unpack boot images of Android for windows, mac and
linux. The most compatible is Android Image Kitchen tool which has been created
by XDA recognized developer Osmosis. This is just one tool in his long list of
tools. There are some situations when we need to unpack boot or recovery images
to modify them or port them from another device having same chipset and almost
same specifications.

Not everyone have a PC or Laptop to do this this kind of thing so some people
look for ways to do it on their Android Phones. Once again Osmosis did a great
job in making the Android Image Kitchen work on Android. Now you don't need PC
to unpack or repack boot images. The only thing you need is a rooted device with
a custom TWRP installed. If you have both, its very easy to unpack images , just
like we do it on PC with Android Image Kitchen.

What you need ?

• A rooted android phone.
• Magisk 18.0 or later
• Terminal emulator / Root browser Classic installed.

Downloads

• AIK- Mobile Installer Zip

Now there are two different ways which you can use to unpack boot imgs. First
one involves the use of terminal emulator only and second only involves the use
of Root Browser Classis app only. I am going tell you about both of them. Before
we move to those steps , first we need to install AIK-Mobile Installer.

Installing Android Image Kitchen Tool

This doesn't require much work, all you have to do is open Magisk Manager and flash AIK-Mobile-Installer zip. You can also flash this zip through TWRP. After reboot we are ready to unpack boot/recovery imgs.
Lets learn about unpack/repack img methods.

Terminal Emulator Method

Before proceeding to unpacking boot/recovery imgs you need boot/recovery imgs
first. When you have them, move the boot.img or recovery.img to
/data/local/AIK-mobile directory using any root explorer app. You can
unapack only one img at a time.

Proper Instructions

Move your boot.img or Recovery.img to
    /data/local/AIK-mobile directory.

Open Terminal emulator and then execute the following commands (italic words
    only) one by one -
→ su (Grant root permission)
→ aik
→ sh unpackimg.sh (Script will automatically detect the boot.img in
    that directory)

After above command your boot.img will be extracted in the
/data/local/AIK-mobile directory, you can see the extracted boot img
in that directory with any root file explorer.

After you have done making changes or whtever you needed to do with
extracted boot.img you may want to repack it again.

To repack the extracted boot.img again open the terminal emulator again and
    execute this command.
→ sh repackimg.sh

Above command will repack the boot img again and you will see a new
image-new.img in the same directory. This is the new boot.img, you
can flash or do whatever you want with it now.

To cleanup the mess i.e the folders we get after unpack and repack of img ,
execute this command in terminal. This will also remove the image-new.img
    file.
→ sh cleanup.sh

Done

Root Browser Method

This method is for those who don't want to write coomands again and again to
unpack and repack imgs.

Open Root broswer classic app ,grant root permission and move your
    boot/recovery img to /data/local/AIK-mobile directory.

In AIK-mobile folder we have unpack , repack and clean shell script which
    are executable scripts.

If you want to unpack img , just tap on unpackimg.sh file ,you will
see a script handler popup, checkmark the "execute script as root" and
finally click on Execute button. You will see the unpacking process
    there.

To repack the img , tap on repackimg.sh file and then tap on execute button
just like we did for unpacking the img. This will repack your img and you
get new img named "image-new.img" as final result.

To clean up folders, tap on cleanup.sh and execute. This will clear all
folders and files created after unpacking and repacking.

It's done :p
